Visiting under-HDB cafes all around Singapore is a great alternative to meeting my friends in town for the nth time. Recently, I discovered a new hangout spot at the Lengkok Bahru neighbourhood in Redhill: Cafe Fufu. This cosy cafe offers artisanal Italian dishes right under a HDB block!
Cafe Fufu specialises in wood-fired sourdough pizzas, including the popular Pizza Salami ($16+/$24+). This tomato-based pie is drizzled in an aromatic oregano-infused olive oil and then covered with thin slices of salami. The pizza is baked until crispy in the oven.
You can see the distinctly charred look of the wood-fired pizza here. The dough also has a firm crust with a pillowy crumb from the well-kneaded dough.
While you’re here, you should try the signature Pizza Fufu ($18+/$24+) too. Instead of tomato sauce, you’ll find a coriander pesto base here. This pizza is topped with chunks of fresh tiger prawns and semi-dried tomatoes, and then sprinkled with some chilli flakes.
Despite being a coriander hater, I found the pesto unexpectedly delicious! The flavours of the pine nuts, olive oil, and chilli flakes complemented its herby taste, so this pizza was quite pleasant.
BTW, we got both of these pizzas as part of their lunch promo deal. This $15+ set meal includes a choice of pizza or pasta with salad and a cup of house-made iced lemon tea.
Once the main course is over, finish the meal with a sweet treat in the form of their Six-Minute Tiramisu ($12+). This dessert came deconstructed, and the waiter assembled the sweet treat in front of us. She first poured the fresh-pulled espresso and cognac mixture on the ladyfingers, then covered them up in mascarpone cheese, before sprinkling cocoa powder on top.
It was truly decadent. Each scoop was filled with rich and creamy mascarpone, accompanied by the bittersweet flavour of the coffee and a subtle kick from the brandy.
Before you leave, don’t forget to check out the majestic-looking wood-fired oven that cooks up all their pizzas! This means you can watch your pies baking in real time.
The ambience of the cafe feels really cosy, especially with the rustic feel of the large red brick flooring and foldable wooden chairs. The smoky smell of freshly baked pizza was also wafting through the air.
