Chang Ji Bing Jia: Hidden Gem Clementi Bakery With Mochi Tau Sar Piah

Chang Ji Bing Jia is an old-school bakery in Clementi West

We love the nostalgia that traditional bakeries provide us, but that’s not all they offer. These old dogs often surface with new tricks that wow us. Take Chang Ji Bing Jia, for example. This traditional bakery in Clementi West has recently launched mochi tau sar piah,

Tau sar piah is a traditional Teochew pastry that is typically made with a lightly salted mung bean filling, encased in flaky layers of a lard-enriched pastry crust. At this Clementi bakery, tau sar piah gets a novel makeover with a thin layer of mochi for chew and a touch of black sesame, layered atop a classic mung bean filling.

These pastries are priced at $1.70 each and are said to be fragrant and lightly chewy from the mochi.

If you’re not a fan of mochi or black sesame, you can also get their traditional tau sar piah offerings at $1 each.

Chang Ji Bing Jia also has a wide selection of other traditional bakes available. Try their selection of fluffy house-made cakes, from their signature fluffy Cheese Cake ($1.70 a slice), to their homely Banana Cake ($3.50).

Another popular pick is their Brownie Cake ($4.50), a moist chocolate cake topped with a layer of icing, and studded with chocolate chips. You’ll rarely find such a cake at neighbourhood bakeries, so give this a try.

Aside from these, they also have a selection of buns and more traditional Chinese cookies.
