Ever since I became a part-time (and unpaid) babysitter to my four-year-old cousin, aching muscles have become a norm, as I try my best to entertain him. Meal times were the ultimate worst. I would run out of ways to entice him to eat his food, and once in a while succumb to the big metal monster known as the iPad. This got me looking for kid-friendly character cafes that would pleased children while they eat.
Here are six best children character cafes suitable for kids below the age of 12. Parents, be sure to prep your camera for all the impending pictures you’re about to snap of your kids with the cute characters!
If you’re a fan of Dreamworks cartoons such as Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon, head over to DreamWorks KouKou Cafe ASAP! Your toddlers’ eyes will definitely lit up when they are served these Dreamworks cartoon-themed Asian dishes. Signature K.B.P ($13++) is a crowd-favourite, comprising three kong bak pau, each embellished with a Madagascar character. The braised pork is enveloped in a generous brown sauce and is extremely tender. For a more filling dish, opt for Secret Ingredient Noodle Soup ($23++) – a kimchi based ramen featuring an assortment of seafood.

Gudetama Cafe depicts Sanrio’s famous lazy egg character to the fullest, with kawaii decorations and actual egg-shaped booths for you to dine in. Eggcited Cajun Chicken with Waffles ($23.90++) comes with a stack of waffles, golden-brown cajun chicken and a sunny side up, and a side of cream and syrup. The components of the dish work well together, boasting a combination sweet and savoury, coupled with the textural contrast from the crispy chicken and chewy waffles. Shoyu Ramen ($21.50++) is a great way to end the meal on a sweet note, featuring piped Mont Blanc under Earl Grey jelly and chocolate feuilletine cake. It is accompanied with a block of panna cotta made to resemble tofu and sweetened rose tea.

If your child’s dream job is to be a superhero, DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe might be the next cafe you visit. Here you will find life-sized figurines of DC super heroes such as Superman and Wonder Woman, as well as posters showcasing the characters’ backstories. One of their signature dishes is the Batman’s Dark Night ($28.90++), featuring a wagyu beef patty sandwiched between charcoal buns that are stamped with the Batman logo. BVS Batman’s Truffle Pasta ($26.90++), however, won me over with its al dente fettuccine tossed in premium Alba truffle sauce, and topped with garlic tiger prawns and shavings of parmigiano.

Expect all things pretty with a touch of pink and girly-ness in My Melody Cafe, which boasts a Strawberry Paradise theme. If you’re feeling ravenous, Princess Bunny ($18.90++) comes with a bed of pink and white Japanese rice moulded into the shape of My Melody’s face, chicken karaage curry, mushroom and brussel sprouts. Load up on more carbs and end the meal with Treasures of Maryland ($19.50++) – a thick brioche toast topped with strawberries, wafer sticks, vanilla ice-cream and character macarons.

Located in the heart of Orchard, Charlie Brown Cafe is a great Halal-certified joint for fans of the comic strip, Peanuts, to gather and have a cuppa. Be greeted by Charlie Brown and Snoopy at the cafe’s doorsteps, and enjoy the scenic view of town by the window seats. Chocolate Crepe ($9) is a great mid-day snack for little ones, but they also dish up hearty mains such as Grilled Chicken Risotto ($16) for a heavier meal. There are also Charlie Brown merchandises up for grabs if the kids want to bring home a toy!

My Little Pony x Kumoya is the latest theme for this pop-up cafe, and boasts colourful pastel tones in both their dishes and decor. Twilight Sparkle Soaring Skies Chicken Katsu Burger ($22.90+) was the most aesthetically-pleasing dish, with crispy katsu chicken slathered in teriyaki sauce sandwiched between pastel purple mantou buns. Be sure to order the Friendship is Magic Mango Milk Frappe with Magic Rainbow Candy Band ($13.90+), which consists of fresh mango puree and a tangy rainbow band that cuts through its sweetness. Do keep your eyes peeled at Kumoya changes their theme every few months, and this pop-up ends on 30 December 2018!
