Some people may lament that Teochew cuisine is slowly vanishing in Singapore, but Chin Lee Restaurant proves that wrong with their long-standing history of 50 years. The Bedok stalwart remains largely popular, even today, for the homely Teochew dishes that they have been serving since 1973.

A classic dish you must try here is their Teochew Steamed Pomfret ($86++/$109++/$132++). It is steamed with mushrooms, tomatoes, pickled mustard greens and ginger, which is said to bring out the fish’s natural sweetness.

Another signature item at Chin Lee Restaurant is Cold Crab (seasonal price), which is a seasonally available dish. At its best, the crab is said to boast a generous amount of roe. It’s served with a lime-based sauce on the side for a touch of tanginess.

If you’re coming with a large group, the Roasted Suckling Pig ($280++) comes highly recommended. This popular delicacy feeds eight to 10 diners, and is loved for its crispy skin and tender meat. This dish, served with keropok, needs to be pre-ordered at least a day ahead of your visit.

Another must-order at Chin Lee Restaurant is Teochew Kway Teow ($14++/$21++/$28++). Here, the flat rice noodles are stir-fried with garlic, chye poh and kai lan to savoury, charred ends.

Don’t forget to save space for Teochew Yam Paste With Gingko Nut ($7++/$35++/$46++), a traditional Teochew dessert that Chin Lee Restaurant is most famous for. The yam paste is cooked with pork lard, giving the dessert a smooth, luscious texture, and extra fragrance. Pumpkin and sweet gingko nuts add texture and flavour to the dessert too
If you’re around the area, you might want to visit Ding Gua Gua Fried Rice, which has $4 egg fried rice by an ex-Din Tai Fung chef! Alternatively, check out Lee Do Restaurant, which specialises in Hock Chew cuisine.
