Over the years, our team has covered plenty of mala spots in Singapore such as A Hot Hideout and Soup Dayz. But there’s none quite like CJ Malatang, a vibey glamping-themed eatery serving up mala till 2am every day! This is your sign to bring your friends to dine in a space adorned with ceiling drapes, dim lighting, and foldable camping chairs.
The eatery specialises in the signature Malatang and Dry Mala, but they also have other bases to choose from such as Chicken, Tomato, Curry, and Tom Yum. Once you pick your base, grab a bowl to start filling up the mala ingredients of your choice.
We managed to snag some of our usual go-to ingredients including cheese tofu, beancurd skin, squid, pork belly, enoki mushrooms, spinach, and rice cakes, to name a few.Â
As for the base, we got their crowd-favourite Malatang and opted for the lowest spice level. We found it manageable and recommend upping it if you want a stronger kick. Flavour-wise, the broth was decent, carrying a rich and slightly numbing Sichuan peppercorn flavour.
We generously loaded our bowl for two and it amounted to $20.35. The mala here is priced at $3 for 100g which is quite affordable compared to similar fare at other chains. Even better, no GST or service charge is incurred here!
Aside from mala, they have a wide range of chuan chuan AKA grilled skewers on the menu: pork, beef, lamb, chicken, prawn, chicken gizzard and more. The skewers are grilled on a BBQ pan at your table, just like how it’s done when you go camping.Â
If you can’t decide which to get, go for their Beef Rib Skewers ($4.80) which feature four sticks of tender marinated beef, seasoned with chilli flakes and cumin.Â
Pair your meal with some of their house-made drinks such as the Ceylon Milk Tea ($3.50), which is great for quelling the spice, or beers for the ultimate camp-night experience.Â
This vibey spot is perfect for satisfying late-night mala cravings since they are open till 2am daily! CJ Malatang is also conveniently located and takes only five minutes by foot from Beauty World MRT Station.Â
Another mala spot to check out is Xiao Man Niu Mala Xiang Guo, where you can feast on their mala buffet for $10. Alternatively, check out our Beauty World food guide for other good eats in the area.
