Dining at Robertson Quay can be a daunting idea for some of us, since the prime district is full of more upmarket eateries—this means reaching deeper into our pockets when the bill arrives. The English House is out to challenge this notion, especially in this climate where we are up against both a foretold recession, rising costs of living, and all that.

Where many of us celebrated 1 May 2023 with an extended weekend break, The English House quietly launched what they’ve called their Inflation Menu, offering lower-priced meals—as compared to their regular menu—to give back to the community. On this menu, which changes every day, each dish is priced at just $9.99++! What’s more, it’s available at both lunch and dinner, seven days a week.

For greater context, The English House is celebrity chef Marco Pierre White’s first restaurant in Asia; he was the youngest chef ever to be awarded three Michelin stars, and this restaurant was three years in the making before it finally opened in 2019, serving classic English fare as well as Hong Kong-style dim sum. Housed in a colonial-style shophouse along Mohamed Sultan Road, it screams posh, so these $9.99++ meals are your best chance at dining there without breaking the bank.
Before you get too excited, here’s the catch: there is only one dish on the Inflation Menu each day, and you’ll only find out what it is when you check out their Instagram page for the daily special. This is only the 12th day that this menu has been run, but so far, the $9.99++ dishes have been pretty diverse, drawing influence from both English and Chinese fare.

For example, their Labour Day dish was Slow Braised Stoddart’s Scotch Shin of Beef with Calamarata Pasta, while the next day saw Deboned Hong Kong Soya Chicken Wing with Whole Braised Egg and Rice. Other days’ Inflation Menu dish of the day options have included Ox Cheek Pie, Black Pepper English Duck Egg Fried Rice, Chicken Mushroom Pie, and even Spanish Acorn-Fed Pork Belly with Tofu and Rice.

They’ve also teased an upcoming Kung Pao Chicken Linguine!

Come June, The English House will also debut The Recession Menu, which will similarly be available daily, starring Slow Braised Ox Cheef with Pomme Puree and Traditional Steak and Eggs with Herb Salad, made with eggs from Oita Prefecture in Japan. Both of these dishes will be priced at $38++, which is a pretty bit more expensive than $9.99++, but still cheaper than The English House’s regular menu, where Beer Battered Wild Cod fish and chips would set you back $52++.
