Waterway Point: Family-Friendly Restaurants For Beef Korean Army Stew And Overflowing Tendon Bowls

Family-friendly restaurants at Waterway Point

Family-friendly restaurants are actually much harder to find than you think. For starters, accommodating the taste buds of the young ones can be quite a challenge. On top of that, finding somewhere with a pleasant and relaxing ambience is always nice in enabling quality family time. Home to plenty of spanking-new estates, Punggol is a sprawling neighbourhood for young families. While there are plenty of eateries around the neighbourhood, here are 10 family-friendly restaurants at Waterway Point that are conveniently located near Punggol MRT!

1. Jeju Kitchen

Be sure to bring a hearty appetite to Jeju Kitchen as they have an extensive menu of flavour-packed dishes. With options for indoor and outdoor seating, this Korean eatery is great for those with big families.

Their signature Volcanic Beef Fried Rice with Cheese ($13.80++) will be a hit at the dining table, as this hot plate dish features kimchi fried rice in the shape of Jeju’s iconic volcano. Mix the fiery rice with its surrounding egg and well-seasoned beef slices to get a burst of smokiness.

With plenty of meat to go around, their Beef Army Stew ($34.80++) will be a feast for the entire family. The cheese slice cuts through the spiciness of this massive stew, resulting in a sweet and tangy broth.

2. DON Akimitsu

Originating from the birthplace of tendon, Asakusa, Tokyo, DON Akimitsu serves up generous and tasty portions of tempura in rice bowls. The store has an illustrious history of 130 years, with Akimitsu Tanihara being the fifth-generation owner.

I have to admit that the child in me got pretty excited about their kids’ meals, which are served in a container that’s shaped like a soccer ball. There are multiple layers inside, and you’ll be able to find fries that are accompanied by either sushi or tempura prawns on the first layer, and a serving of udon noodles at the bottom.

Kid’s Meal B ($9.90++) comes with a piece of the store’s signature tempura-battered prawn, which has a crispy craggy exterior and a satisfying crunch to it. The noodles are also nice and springy, making them a delight to slurp up.

3. Buddy Hoagies Cafe & Grill

Conveniently located next to Waterway Point Happy Park, Level 2, Buddy Hoagies Cafe & Grill is an ideal restaurant to unwind at while keeping an eye on the kids. Grab a seat by the window at this Western joint to have a prime view of the playground that boasts both a wet and dry zone.

Their meat-centric menu highlights value-for-money dishes, such as Mushroom Steak ($15.50++ for 180g, $18.50++ for 250g), where the accompanying earthy mushroom-based sauce elevates the beefy flavours of this tender meat. Or go for their Ribeye Steak ($16.50++ for 180g, $20.50++ for 250g) featuring a thick and juicy beef slab. Complete any order of meat with two free sides, which include coleslaw, onion rings, fries, baked potato, and hot veggie.

4. PappaRich

With over 140 outlets worldwide in over 15 countries, PappaRich serves up a range of delicious Malaysian dishes. Its inexpensive menu ought to have something for everyone in the family. The dishes here are based on traditional recipes and have a comforting home-cooked vibe to them.

There are plenty of dishes to choose from, but if you could squeeze in just one dish, make it their best-selling Nasi Lemak with Chicken Curry + Sambal Prawns ($13.90++). Every component of this dish is great on its own, but the coconut rice is the real winner here. Made with coconut milk and pandan leaves, the light and fluffy rice binds everything else with its mild but creamy flavour.

5.  Yayoi

It’s easy to rack up a bill while dining at Japanese restaurants, but YAYOI has wallet-friendly options so you can have your fill of this Asian cuisine without breaking the bank. Their teishoku, which are basically set meals, are great for sharing.

Don’t worry about big eaters in the family, as this Japanese eatery offers free-flow rice—specifically Kinmemai rice—which is packed with more nutrients.

For those who can’t decide between noodles or rice, you can settle for both with the Sukiyaki Teishoku ($18.90++). This carb-dense dish has a mix of konnyaku and udon noodles, along with tender beef slices and a medley of vegetables simmered in a sweet and piquant soy-based sauce. Mix in the accompanying onsen egg for added creamy notes in the otherwise sweet dish.

This halal-certified restaurant serves up a wealth of exciting dishes from its Kid’s Menu ($9.90++). There are quite a few choices to choose from, which include pasta, seafood platter, and of course, the store’s signature fish and chips. Each meal also comes with a fruit juice, ice-cream, a cup of buttered corn, and a free kiddy gift.

The Kid’s Meal Set ($7.80++) is served in a cherry red sports car, filled with a variety of exciting dishes that junior will love. These include a choice of two sides, onigiri, egg omelette, marshmallows, strawberries, rockmelons, and a packet of grape juice.

There are five side dishes to choose from, with items such as tako balls and teriyaki chicken being popular favourites. Mayonnaise and ketchup are available upon request for fussy eaters as well.

8.  Bali Thai

Thai restaurants are usually not the best option for families with little ones, due to the spice levels of popular dishes such as tom yum and green curry. However, Bali Thai is one of the few Thai restaurants to have a kid’s menu, so parents won’t need to compromise on their spicy Thai meal. Priced at $9.80++, the kid’s meals are great value for money and comes with a side of mango pudding and a glass of O.J. or iced Milo.

While the adults are firing up their taste buds with the scrumptious Tom Yum ($7.50++ for a bowl, $14.50++ for a pot), which comes with either seafood, prawn or chicken, children can tuck into dishes from the kid’s menu, such as the Grilled Chicken Chop. Here, a bed of fries is accompanied by extremely succulent, boneless chicken pieces that are laced with a robust, smoky aroma.

9. Uncle Leong Signatures

Family dinners and zi char are synonymous to each other. So if you’re at Waterway Point looking for a good zi char spot to visit with the fambam, look no further than Uncle Leong Signatures. Best known for their seafood creations, this family-friendly eatery pushes out more than just your regular chilli crab and salted egg pork ribs.

Sweet with a refreshing fruity zing is the Sunkist Pork Ribs (from $13.80++ for small), which reminded us of marmalade pork. As it rests on a bed of dried chilli, the Hong Kong Style Typhoon Shelter Crab (seasonal price) may look like a scorching treat, but the crab meat is surprisingly actually more fragrant than spicy.

Unit number: #B1-21
Opening hours:  Daily 11am to 10:30pm

10. Rong Hua Bak Kut Teh

Young and old folks alike will be completely satisfied when dining at Rong Hua Bak Kut Teh. Specialising in the Teochew-style BKT, the store has refillable broth is not too peppery, making it a joy to slurp up. Go big or go home and order the Premium Loin Ribs ($10.50) which features a massive prime rib with tender meat that falls off the bone. I like how it is less fatty too, making it a healthier option for little ones.

Complete your meal with their Braised Pig Trotters ($7.90 for regular, $10.90 for large). Braised in aromatic sauce, the gelatinous pork can easily be sliced with a chopstick, showcasing how tender it is. Even the fussiest of eaters will never say no to Stewed Pork Belly with Lotus Bun ($6 for two pieces), which comprises a thick slab of pork belly nestled between pillowy buns.
