A bowl of kolo mee is all it takes to make my day, but getting my hands on a legit bowl in Singapore has been like trying to find a needle in a haystack. If you, like me, can appreciate kolo mee and fried dumplings, Fortune Pot in Johor Bahru Mount Austin is an eatery for your consideration.
We ordered a bowl of Sarawak Kolo Mee (RM13.90+/~S$4) and their Fried Shrimp and Meat Wanton (RM12.90+/~S$3.70). We also got the JB’s Signature (RM12.90+/~S$3.70) to compare with the kolo mee.
Though similar in presentation, we preferred the Sarawak Kolo Mee to the JB’s Signature. The former comes with minced meat with thin char siew slices atop a bed of springy egg noodles, while the latter is served with the same noodle but with dumplings on the side and char siew slices instead.
Sarawak kolo mee is typified by a balanced combination of lard and shallot oil, making the dish extra fragrant and moreish.
The one we had at Fortune Pot didn’t fall short of our expectations—we loved how simple, savoury, and springy our noodles were.
While the kolo mee was savoury with the right amount of light soy sauce flavour, the JB’s Signature was slightly bland, which left us uninspired to finish our bowl. But that’s not to say all was bad about this dish—the meaty dumplings were the redeeming factor.
Here’s a tip: you only have to pay an additional RM1+/~S$0.30 for a bigger bowl of noodles.
We also paired our noods with the six-piece Fried Shrimp and Meat Wanton.
We were impressed with the generous, well-marinated shrimp and pork filling, but failed to feel the same about the wonton skin. The fried wrapper was a tad too thick, bringing the alkaline taste of the wonton skin to the forefront.Â
Though we didn’t get any drinks at Fortune Pot, there’s the popular Coco Milo Ice (RM8.90+/~S$2.50) or Ceylon Teh Ice (RM7.90+/~S$2.20) for you to enjoy with your noodles.
