Frozen prata recipes

You’ve probably eaten frozen prata the traditional way, dipped in curry, but this instant flatbread is far more versatile than you think. With our list of frozen prata recipes, you can transform this staple into localised desserts such as kaya butter croissants, savoury snacks such as cheesy sambal garlic cups, and more.

1. Kaya Butter Croissant

Kaya-butter toast is a traditional breakfast enjoyed by most Singaporeans. Elevate this dish by having it in a croissant format, made easier with our Kaya Butter Croissant recipe, where we use frozen prata as the puff pastry. While we made our own kaya filling for these croissants, you’re free to use any store-bought kaya if that’s more convenient.

  4. Top with the banana slice and egg wash.
  5. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes at 180⁰C.

3. Cheesy Sambal Garlic Cups

One of the savoury frozen prata recipes on this list is Cheesy Sambal Garlic Cups, a delicious snack that’s also easy to make. Here, you get the spiciness of sambal, with a creamy finish from melted mozzarella. You’re free to use any sambal paste you have on hand, but we recommend making this recipe with ikan bilis sambal, for an extra dash of umami.

2 tbsp sambal paste

2 tbsp minced garlic
4 tbsp parsley flakes
6 pieces of frozen prata, cut into semi circles
1 cup grated mozzarella cheese

7. Prata Cinnamon Roll

Cinnamon rolls might be one of my favourite desserts of all time. I love the stickiness of the sweet filling, lightly spiced with cinnamon. You can easily make this dessert in the comfort of your own home, with this Prata Cinnamon Roll recipe.

This recipe includes making your own three-ingredient cinnamon filling. Finish the dessert with drizzles of condensed milk, and you can even top it with pecan, or your choice of nuts, for an added crunch.

Time needed: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp brown sugar
1½ tbsp cinnamon powder
3 pieces of frozen prata
Condensed milk

Directions:

  1. Mix butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon powder together until smooth.

  4. Air-fry at 190⁰C for 13 minutes.
  5. Drizzle condensed milk, and top with chopped nuts, as desired.

9. Blueberry Pie

We’ve established in this list of recipes that frozen prata makes a great base for pies, pancakes, desserts, and the like. This blueberry pie recipe further supports that, as the prata pastry holds up well against the sweet-and-tart, homemade blueberry filling.

Yield: 1 to 2 servings

Time needed: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

2 pieces of frozen prata, cut into smaller circles
1 cup blueberries
9g lemon juice
6g cornstarch
15g sugar
Salt

Directions:

  1. In a baking tray, bake the circles of prata for 10 minutes at 230⁰C.
  2. In a bowl, add blueberries, lemon juice, cornstarch, sugar, a sprinkle of salt, and mix.
  3. Top the pastry in the baking tray with this blueberry filling. Decorate the top with leftover pieces of frozen prata.
  4. Bake at 230⁰C for 15 minutes.

10. Red Bean Pancake

Red bean pancake is a sweet item I always reach out to at dim sum restaurants. Recreate this at home using frozen prata and store-bought red bean paste.

This is definitely my favourite recipe on the list—it’s more generously portioned than the red bean pancake you get at Chinese restaurants, and you’re free to stuff the pancake with as much filling as you want. The sesame seeds on top bring a nuttiness that helps cut through the sweetness of the red bean paste too.

Yield: 2 to 3 servings

Time needed: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

4 tbsp red bean paste
2 pieces of frozen prata
Black sesame seeds
White sesame seeds
1 tbsp oil

Directions:

  1. Spread red bean paste on a piece of prata.
  2. Top with another piece of prata, black sesame seeds, and white sesame seeds.
  3. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat, and fry the prata, with the sesame-seed-face down till golden brown, then flip and repeat. Serve warm.
