New Korean Restaurant Opens In Telok Ayer With Traditional Pork Bone Soup Under $20

For many Singaporeans, familiarity with Korean food tends to start and end with K-BBQ, kimchi stew, and seafood pancake. GAMJA, a new Korean restaurant in Telok Ayer, is looking to change that by introducing diners to gamjatang, a dish that remains largely unfamiliar here despite being one of Korea’s most common comfort foods.

For the uninitiated, gamjatang is a hearty, slow-simmered pork bone and potato stew, seasoned with perilla seed powder and chilli. At GAMJA, a bowl starts affordably from just $15.80++.

The restaurant was founded by Korean chefs Shin Jae-Yoon and Nam Wan-Hyuk; Nam trained at Japan’s Tsuji Culinary Institute and has more than 10 dining concepts in Korea, while Shin is a Korean entrepreneur based in Singapore.

Ambience-wise, the restaurant is clean and modern, with dark wooden tables and dim lighting. Tables comfortably seat anywhere from a solo diner to groups of six, making it just as suited to a quick solo meal as it is to winding down after work with friends.

GAMJA’s gamjatang is available in five variations, each served with rice: Traditional ($15.80++), White ($15.80++), Aged Kimchi ($17.80++), Boneless ($17.80++), and Perilla Seed ($18.80++), which features a nutty, non-spicy broth.

Sides are also available, including Kimchi Jeon Pancake ($12.80++), Rolled Omelette ($14.80++), Perilla Oil Fried Eggs ($8.80++), and Signature Potato Salad ($10++).

Come evening, the menu expands to sharing-style gamjatang for the table, offering the same dishes as the lunch menu but with prices starting from $53++ for a big Original Pork Gamjatang. A Korean BBQ-style grill menu is also available, with dishes such as Jjapaghetti ($12++), Beef Short Ribs ($48++), Pork Belly ($28++), Grilled Shrimp ($18++) and more. Plus, diners who order off the Korean BBQ set get a small bowl of gamjatang thrown in for free, on the side.

To drink, GAMJA serves soju by the shot ($10++) or bottle, alongside beer and makgeolli.
