Golden Mile’s Famous Sweet Potato Balls And Thai Banana Fritters Are Now At Beach Road

Golden Banana has sweet potato balls and banana fritters at City Gate

ICMYI, most of the F&B tenants at Golden Mile Complex have already relocated, or are in the midst of doing so. If you used to frequent SG’s ‘Little Thailand’, you’d be familiar with Golden Banana, a humble kiosk near the Thai supermarket entrance. They’re famous for their deep-fried sweet potato balls and banana fritters that are absolutely addictive.

Back when they were at Golden Mile, there was almost always a queue no matter the time of day. The stall has recently moved to City Gate, a mixed-development mall located along Beach Road.

Golden Banana fans will be happy to know that everything at this new location is pretty much the same—the menu and prices, down to the plastic bag used to pack each order.

When we were there on a weekday at 11am, just after they opened, only two items were available: Sweet Potato Balls and Banana. Each serving costs $4; the former gets you 12 balls, while the latter comes with 6 chunky pieces.

The Sweet Potato Balls are a signature for good reason. They’re served piping hot, fresh from the fryer, so each piece is crispy on the outside. The batter isn’t too thick either, so you don’t get jelak even after popping one too many.

Sink your teeth in and you’ll be treated to a mochi-like, chewy interior that’s slightly sweet and creamy from the root vegetable. Be warned, it’s very addictive.

Don’t sleep on the Thai-style banana fritters too, as they’re no less delicious. Unlike our local goreng pisang, the batter here is slightly sweeter and crispier, with a pleasant honeyed aftertaste.

The naturally sweet and soft banana complements the deep-fried crumbs that get tossed into each bag; it’s a party in the mouth.

The stall has been said to sell out before their stipulated closing time, so make sure you visit earlier to get your fix.
