There are a ton of aesthetic cafes and restaurants in Katong and Joo Chiat. One that has recently joined the hood is Good Chai People, a chai specialty cafe along East Coast Road.
A 10-minute bus ride from Mountbatten MRT Station, the spacious cafe sees Scandinavian interiors matched with tastefully arranged foliage and rattan elements.
There are a couple of long wood tables for communal dining, as well as cosy nooks near the entrance for those who want a shot for their gram.
Their food menu is pretty extensive, with a variety of starters, all-day brunch fare, and mains served from 11:30am.
A signature is the 24-Hr Beef Brisket ($20+), a hearty dish of flavourful pulled beef and tender potato chunks piled on sourdough toast, topped with poached egg, and served with a side salad.
Cut into the egg and pair the creamy yolk with the savoury shreds of meat.
Another must-try is the Prawn & Chorizo Aglio Olio ($22+): al dente linguine tossed in prawn head butter, garlic, and chilli padi, topped with chorizo and tiger prawns.
The pasta is well-seasoned with rich umami from the prawns, complemented by garlicky, spicy notes.
If you’re in the mood for something sweet, get the French Toast Lovin’ ($20+). This brunch classic features thick French toast made of brioche, topped with whipped cream cheese and fruits, and finished with a maple thyme drizzle.
The indulgent treat is sweet and buttery, offset by the tangy cream cheese and fresh berries.
Your meal at Good Chai People wouldn’t be complete without a dose of their specialty chai beverages. The hot Salted Maple Chai ($7+) is a personal favourite; it’s made with Ceylon tea, oat milk, Himalayan salt, maple syrup, and coconut sugar. Otherwise, the iced Hojichai Latte ($8+) is an excellent caffeine-free alternative featuring premium Japanese roasted tea.
It’s worth noting that their tea menu swaps out regular dairy for oat milk, making the drinks vegan-friendly. Coconut sugar is used too, for a deeper and more robust fragrance.
Another chio cafe to check out nearby is Cafe Natsu, which serves Japanese-inspired brunch and beverages. Otherwise, visit the newly opened Cafe Limonci, a hidden work-friendly spot in Tai Seng with delicious waffles and gelato!
