The Chinese banquet restaurant is located in Newton’s Hotel Royal, and has been a firm favourite for special occasions with the family. They have revived their all-you-can-eat buffet ala carte buffet of late, which features over 40 menu items, spanning savouries and dessert.

The menu is divided into signature dishes, of which there is a one serving per table limit, snacks, soups, meats, seafood, vegetables, rice and noodles, as well as desserts.

For signature dishes, you get atas eats, from Peking Duck to Soy Sauce Prawns, and a Whole Abalone with Thai Sauce. There’s also Deep Fried Soon Hock Fish, which is great for sharing.

While these premium items are limited to one serving, the rest of Happy Joy’s extensive buffet offerings are thankfully unlimited.

Start off with Black Pepper Smoked Duck and Thai Sauce Jelly Fish to whet the appetite. Then move on to Double-Boiled Soup for something comforting before you tackle the rest of the menu. The soup’s flavour changes daily, but they also have a Boiled Stomach Soup with Pepper that is permanently on the menu.

On to the meats: get Duck Meat with Plum Sauce, German Pork Knuckle, Deep-Fried Pork Ribs with Salted Egg, and other proteins free-flow to feast with your dining kakis. Complete this selection with some seafood, from Poached Fresh Prawns to Steamed Fish with Sichuan Pickles.

Round off the meal with your choice of carb, then move on to desserts. There are both hot and cold desserts, including Chilled Mango Sago with Pomelo—a perennial favourite.

The buffet is available at lunch or dinner, throughout the week. Dining slots are between 11:30am to 2:15pm, and 6pm to 9:15pm. Be sure to make a reservation via their website so you can ensure you’ll get a table on your preferred day.
