Hone Bakes: Popular IG Bakery With Korean Matcha Gateau Cake Has Pop-Up At Orchard Central

Hone Bakes pops up in Somerset with trendy Korean-inspired cakes

We’re huge stans of home-based businesses (HBB) offering unique bakes that go beyond the usual cafe stuff: With Love Maxine, twoambakes, and dilutedcoke are just some examples. Another IG bakery to add to this list is Hone Bakes, an up-and-coming brand that’s already gained a steady following despite being relatively new to the scene—they’ve only just launched this year!

You can now try the popular bakery’s signature desserts at their Baker X pop-up, from now till 13 October 2024. For those who are unaware, Baker X is an initiative by Far East Organisation that aims to give home bakers a chance to operate a cafe and expand their following. The space is located on the fourth floor of Orchard Central, a short stroll from Somerset MRT Station.

Here’s another fun fact: Hone Bakes is run by Chew Yi En, who used to work at Eatbook.sg, and her mother!

If you’re not sure what to order, their signature Matcha Black Sesame Gateau Cake ($12) is not to be missed. This indulgent dessert slab features a thick matcha and black sesame base, followed by a chewy black sesame mochi middle, matcha ganache, black sesame cream, and matcha crumble on top. It’s super gao and thick, without being too sweet.

There’s also the Stuffed Pandan Gula Melaka Chiffon Cake ($6.50) if you prefer something lighter, yet no less satisfying.

Alternatively, order the pop-up-exclusive Salted Matcha Dark Chocolate Cookie ($5), where a matcha cookie is topped with dark chocolate, and more matcha goodness in the form of a ganache.

You get a heavenly combination of earthy matcha and decadent dark chocolate, with a hint of salt to offset the richness.

If you’re not in the mood for a sweet treat, consider their sourdough bagels instead. Slightly tangy with a natural sweetness, the Pumpkin Sourdough Bagel with Chicken Floss ($5.20) is the bakery’s take on the classic Singaporean snack: chicken floss bun.

Hone Bakes also sells freshly baked cookies by the tub, should you wish to da bao back to share with your loved ones.

Visit their pop-up from now till 13 October, Wednesdays to Sundays from 11am to 7pm!

In related news,  Coffeehouse by Kobashi is another HBB that recently opened a brick-and-mortar cafe in Chinatown. Alternatively, for more recommendations in the mall, check out our Orchard Central food guide.
