If you need a brief respite from Singapore’s scorching heat, head over to Hong Kong Yummy Soup at Alexandra Village Food Centre for “cooling” bowls of traditional soup. Founded in 2014 by a couple from Hong Kong, the hawker stall also earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand award in 2018 and 2019!

There’s always a long queue at the hawker stall, particularly during the peak lunch hour, so be sure to drop by as early as you can to avoid the crowd.

The menu is straightforward with six kinds of soup: Spareribs Soup with Lotus Root ($4.50), Spareribs Soup with Winter Melon ($4.50), Brazil Mushroom Soup With Chicken ($5.50), Spareribs Soup with Mushrooms ($4.50), Cordyceps Flowers Soup with Chicken ($5.50), and Night Blooming Cereus Spareribs Soup ($4.50).

The soups are all crafted from scratch and contain no MSG. The owners have meticulously selected each ingredient for its nutritional and health benefits. For instance, one of their soups features cordyceps flower, which is believed to aid in strength recovery, while another includes night-blooming cereus—AKA ba wang hua—a cactus plant valued for its detoxifying properties.

Notably, their best-selling soups are the ones containing these unique ingredients.

You can’t go wrong with the Spareribs Soup with Mushrooms, which is said to have a subtle, savoury profile complemented by sweet boiled carrots. Online reviews have also raved about the tender, fall-off-the-bone spareribs, which pair nicely with a dip of soy sauce. For a more filling meal, you can also get a bowl of white rice ($0.50) to go with your soup.

For those with a penchant for robust herbal flavours, the Brazil Mushroom Soup with Chicken is a must-try. Packed with Brazilian cap mushrooms, white fungus, red dates, and a huge chicken drumstick, this bowl of goodness is said to be nourishing for the ladies, and is believed to help improve one’s complexion too.

Besides soup, the stall also offers side dishes, such as Steamed Pork Ribs ($4.50) and Pumpkin Steamed Minced Pork ($4). The latter features pumpkin chunks with minced pork, offering a blend of sweet and savoury with each bite.
