This Self-Service Cai Png Cafe In Alexandra Has 60 Dishes To Choose From And Free-Flow Rice

Hundred Grains is a new cai png cafe in Labrador Park

Cai png AKA economy rice is an everyday staple for most of us, so much so that you can easily find a stall around any neighbourhood. But Hundred Grains has something a tad different to offer with their self-service concept, and here comes the best part—you’re spoiled with 60 dishes to choose from.

If you’re planning to dine in, simply get one of their individual plate trays and pick your ingredients. We encourage you to take your time to browse through their ingredients as the variety of dishes here can be overwhelming at first glance.

Out of the 60 ingredients, there are cai png essentials such as Crispy Pork In Sweet and Sour Sauce, Stir-fried Chinese Broccoli with Garlic, and Braised Tofu with Pork. For the adventurous, you can opt for their unique items, including Pickled Pepper Frog, Stir-fried Tripe, and Spicy and Sour Chicken Gizzards.

Since they adopt a self-service concept, you can take as much as your tray can fit. But keep in mind that ingredients are weighed here at the price of $3.98+ per 100g. This is a hefty price tag for a plate of economy rice, so we were hoping that the food would make up for the price point.

After you’ve chosen your ingredients, head over to the free-flow corner for carbs and drinks. We appreciated that there were three choices of rice available: White Rice, Brown Rice, and Porridge. FYI, the carbs aren’t weighed here, which means they are free!

As for their drinks, take note that they change up from time to time. During our visit, we opted for the Calamansi and Blackcurrant juices.

After much thought, we decided on the Mapo Tofu, Century Egg, Steamed Egg with Shrimp, Stir-fried Mushrooms, Sliced Pork with Garlic Sauce, and Baked Pumpkin with Salted Egg Yolk. My colleague and I were pleasantly surprised by how clean-tasting yet flavourful the ingredients were. The cost of our plate amounted to $21.15—shocking, we know.

We particularly enjoyed their Baked Pumpkin with Salted Egg Yolk and Stir-fried Mushrooms, and cleared our tray in no time. The former was a nice alternative to potato and sweet potato, while the latter was chewy and flavoursome.

Here’s our verdict: you do get a huge variety of liao to choose from, and the dishes were decent, but we’re not sure if the meal was worth the hefty price tag.

We recommend visiting after 11:45am as we noticed that all the ingredients were prepared nearing lunchtime. If you’d like to take away your cai png, you get 20% off your bill! This promotion is only available for a limited time, so enjoy it while it lasts.
