Il Clay Supper Club Review: New Pizzeria By Award-Winning Italian Chef At Clarke Quay

Il Clay Supper Club has legit Italian-Mediterranean food at Clarke Quay

Clarke Quay is home to many trendy eateries, such as  Swee Lee, a new work-friendly cafe with free vinyl listening stations, or Go Rouge, a rebranded sando cafe by the owners of 46mittsu. Adding to this lineup is a new Italian restaurant: Il Clay Supper Club

Established by award-winning Italian pizzaiolo Ciro Sorrentino, Il Clay Supper Club aims to bring authentic Italian-Mediterranean cuisine to Singaporeans. To see if the fare lived up to the hype, my colleague and I dropped by the restaurant to check it out ourselves.

Food at Il Clay Supper Club

With the server’s recommendation, we settled on the Regina Margherita ($32++), a ‘San Marzano’ tomato sauce-based pizza. Dubbed as the restaurant’s best-selling pizza, it came with fresh burrata cheese, pesto sauce, oregano, dried yellow and red tomatoes, basil, and was drizzled with extra virgin oil.

The pizza dough was quite fluffy and airy, and I appreciated how it did not become soggy even with the generous amount of sauce slathered over it. The burrata cheese and mint worked together to provide a refreshing yet savoury taste that complemented the rest of the ingredients well.

For mains, we tried the Sicilian Stuffed Squid ($32++), which is a whole squid stuffed with saffron risotto and chorizo peperonata sauce. If you don’t know, peperonata is made by simmering bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes until they reach a soft consistency.

I liked how the squid was not too chewy and tough. Each piece of squid also contained a substantial amount of fragrant risotto, which was buttery and savoury. Unfortunately, I found this combination to be quite jelak and it was hard to finish this dish.

Thankfully, the Lobster Ravioli ($58++) fared better. The ravioli was stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach, and drenched in seafood bisque sauce before being topped off with some juicy lobster meat.

The lobster meat was quite succulent and had a sweet flavour to it. When eaten with the ricotta cheese ravioli, this combination resulted in a good balance of sweet and savoury. My colleague and I both agreed that this was a must-try.

To end our meal on a sweet note, we ordered the best-selling Flambe Bombe Alaska ($25++), a unique creation of vanilla ice cream cake encased in meringue, before being flambeed with rum for a caramelised finish.

Upon ordering, a server will prepare this dessert by heating the rum in front of you. Once poured, you’ll get a spectacular performance of blue flames dancing atop the meringue.

Unlike how it looks, this dessert was surprisingly not too sweet, perhaps due to the flambeed rum. It brought out a slightly smokey and spicy flavour which mellowed the sweetness of the ice cream.

Ambience at Il Clay Supper Club

Il Clay Supper Club boasts a chic and modern interior that creates an intimate atmosphere. Each table has a lamp that allows diners to choose between white or warm table lighting.

With both indoor and outdoor seating options, the restaurant can accommodate up to 52 diners indoors and 20 diners in their breezy outdoor space. There is also a cosy pizza corner for eight customers to enjoy a quick bite.

Il Clay Supper Club is a five-minute walk from Clarke Quay MRT Station

The verdict

While the prices may be slightly higher than average, I would still recommend visiting Il Clay Supper Club whether it’s for birthday celebrations, anniversary dinners, or if you just want to have a drink with your friends. You’ll get authentic Italian-Mediterranean cuisine along the scenic view of the Singapore River, what better way to celebrate than that?
