My guilty pleasure after a late-night KTV sesh with my friends is almost always fried chicken. In fact, I’m probably Wingstop’s number one fan. My gripe, though, is that they close early, which isn’t ideal for my supper plans. If you’re like me, Kiap Kiap is a new fried chicken bar in Bugis you have to check out.

Decked out in retro-inspired red-and-white decor and LED lights, the space aims to create a vibey spot for people to connect over good food and drinks. There are even card games to keep you entertained if you ever get bored.

Food-wise, they specialise in all things fried chicken. Their signature Kiap Kiap’s Original Fried Chicken ($12++) features two pieces of golden-brown fried chicken. The chicken is said to be juicy and moist inside, while the exterior breading is shatteringly crunchy and seasoned with a secret blend of spices.

If you’re looking to spice things up, there are also other fried chicken flavours to try. Mala addicts should definitely go for their Duck Fat Mala Fried Chicken ($14++), comprising the same two pieces of fried chicken drenched in a spicy, savoury mala chilli oil made by simmering Sichuan peppercorns and other spices in duck fat.

Those who can’t get enough of Genki Sushi’s mentaiko mayo should order the Mentaiko Fried Chicken With Ikura ($18++), drizzled generously with creamy mentaiko mayo, then torched and garnished with ikura for a satisfying pop of flavour.

Fried chicken isn’t all that they serve, though, and it’ll be remiss of me to not share about their sides. Online reviews claim that their King’s Truffle Poutine ($20++) is a must-try: crispy yet fluffy fries topped with dollops of truffle mayo, a sunny-side-up fried egg, black truffle, and parmesan, all doused in umami beef gravy.

Get their Hot Mozzarella ($12++) for some seriously satisfying cheese pulls; here, you get stretchy mozzarella coated in a light breading and served with a tangy raspberry sauce for a sweet-and-savoury combo.

Otherwise, try their Seafood Jenny’s Udon ($16++), a dish inspired by the founder’s mum. Meant to be shared round the table, it comes packed with springy udon noodles stir-fried with eggs and a medley of seafood, including scallops, squid, prawns, and octopus. It’s said to have a strong wok hei taste that’s reminiscent of hokkien mee.

Round things off with the Banana Pudding ($6++), served tableside: a heaping scoop of caramelised bananas and mascarpone sandwiched between layers of ladyfingers, topped with Biscoff cookie crumbs.

If cocktails are your thing, they’ve got a solid lineup of speciality drinks. Their signature, the Babygirl ($22++), was originally curated by one of the founders for his wife, blending Patron Silver tequila with elderflower and raspberry.

Kiap Kiap also hosts monthly events. In October, they will be hosting Girl’s Night every Wednesday from 6pm to 11:30pm, which comes with free-flow truffle fries, 1-for-1 promotion for all gin and tonic beverages, and a complimentary tarot card reading with a minimum spend of $50 per person, just in time for the spooky season of Halloween!

The restaurant is a four-minute walk away from Bugis MRT Station.

My hot take: Based on personal experience, the earthy notes of matcha balance out the richness of fried chicken, so after your meal, get your matcha fix at Little Rituals, located a nine-minute walk away. If you’re not so adventurous, you can check out our guide to the best food in Bugis instead for more eats in the locale.
