Kómma Social Cafe: New Cafe With DIY Craft Kits And Workshops At Paya Lebar Quarter Mall

Craft workshops at kómma Social Cafe

Paya Lebar Quarter has been popping this year with foreign chains, such as Mom’s Touch and Kanada-Ya, opening up at the mall. Straying away from these big brand names is a new local joint, kómma Social Cafe. This recently minted cafe just opened its doors over the weekend at PLQ Mall offering coffee and pastries from Huggs Coffee. Plus, you can join in on their monthly creative workshops or check out the selection of crafting activities and curated artisanal goods by homegrown brands.

Though waffles and pastries are mainstays on their menu, don’t let these small bites trick you into thinking they’re not filling. Baked in-house, their fluffy waffles can be paired with sweet or savoury toppings. Choose between half a waffle ($7) and a full waffle ($10). You can’t go wrong with their Choco Banana.

Cutting through these thick and crispy stacks of waffles gave way to a fluffy yet dense interior. The batter paired well with the accompanying roasted banana slices and Nutella spread, which added notes of hazelnut.

Another sweet waffle pairing is their Kaya and Dulche. As an avid fan of Ya Kun, I loved this duo of kaya and butter, especially with the buttery notes from the waffle.

Dollops of kaya and malted caramel complement the fluffy, toasty waffle that is topped with a slab of butter.

The malted caramel reminded me of condensed milk. Dipping the waffle in this sauce gave additional flavour to the kaya spread.

For something heartier, try their savoury option of Corned Beef with Egg. You’ll score salt-cured brisket along with a sunny side up for added protein.

Sweeten this delectable pairing with a drizzle of maple syrup. This sweet sauce not only helped to cut through the briny minced meat, but also lent the rich waffles an earthy flavour.

Their assortment of pastries is based on availability. We managed to snag their Almond Croissant ($3.50). The flaky croissant is filled with an almond paste with a strong nutty aftertaste, reminiscent of Chinese almond cream.

In line with their efforts to support local, kómma Social Cafe has partnered with Huggs Coffee to offer unique coffee blends. Caffeine lovers can get their daily caffeine dose with a Latte ($5). This milky coffee is served in a Huskee cup, which is made from coffee husk.

Tea lovers should not miss their Matcha ($6), especially when it has cute Totoro latte art. Once you’re done Instagramming this cup of tea, mix in the foam to enjoy all of its creaminess. The sweet notes are balanced out by the matcha’s natural bitterness.

This space doubles up to hold workshops where patrons can pick up a skill or two, such as leather making and calligraphy. Once you’re satisfied with your handiwork, you can grab a bite and a cuppa joe as a reward.

Don’t worry if you missed out on their monthly workshops, as there is a corner stocked with DIY craft kits for you to try your hand at being artsy.

There’s also an option to shop from their range of ready-made items such as iron-on patches and accessories by local makers.
