When it comes to Japanese curry rice in Singapore, names like Maji Curry and Monster Curry often pop into mind first, but one spot that has quietly cultivated a loyal following is Kuro Kare. The eatery made a name for itself during its previous operations at Singapore Management University, where its signature 36-hour slow-cooked black Japanese curry became a hit among students and curry enthusiasts alike. Following the closure of that outlet, Kuro Kare has found a new home at Havelock II, a four-minute walk from Chinatown and Clarke Quay MRT Stations. Â
The restaurant is helmed by chefs Aidan Wee and Ho Bing Rru, who bring a wealth of culinary experience from the now-defunct fine-dining restaurant Fleurette, as well as stints at the one-Michelin-starred Meta and the Hong Kong Jockey Club. They aim to bring fine-dining techniques and premium ingredients to the general public at wallet-friendly prices.Â
Their goal is simple: to craft the best Japanese curry in Singapore. Their signature 36-hour black curry features caramelised onions cooked with more than 25 ingredients, including tomatoes, apples, and dark chocolate, before the curry is left to rest for 24 hours. The result is a curry that leans heavily on umami, with a deeper and more robust flavour than most other options on the market.Â
All dishes here are affordably priced, with lunch mains starting from just $12.90. The restaurant is also absorbing GST and service charge during lunch hours.Â
The two standout options are the Kuro Fried Chicken Curry ($12.90), which features 24-hour brined chicken katsu with smoky tare, and the Iberico Pork Katsu Curry ($16.90), with a generous 250g acorn-fed Iberico pork cutlet coated in their signature breading.Â
If you are not in the mood for Japanese curry, there are also options such as the Charcoal Grilled Striploin Steak Don ($18.90), served in a generous 200g steakhouse-style portion, Omakase Barachirashi Don ($15.90), and Aged Salmon Sashimi Chazuke ($15.90).
We also hear that the restaurant switches things up at night with off-menu side dishes, where the team flexes their creative juices with dishes such as Siam Diu Chicken Wings (price TBD) and a unique take on the classic Kaya Toast (price TBD).
The next time you are craving comforting Japanese curry, be sure to check out Kuro Kare before the crowds start to flock there. Whether you are here for their signature curry dishes or unique creations, we are confident you will leave with a satisfied tummy!Â
