Lao Ban Mian: Get Cheap Salted Egg Pan Mee At JB Mount Austin

Lao Ban Mian has salted egg pan mee in Johor Bahru

If you’re looking to have delectable noodles in Johor Bahru, Mount Austin’s Lao Ban Mian is a great option. They serve unique ban mian creations such as hae bee hiam ban mian and mala ban mian, to name a few. Because of their creative menu, the restaurant is often packed during lunch and dinner hours.

If you’re a spicy food lover, the Mala Pan Mee (RM14.90+/~S$4.20+) is a must-try. We ordered this with you mian, and the dish came with minced meat, fishballs, meatballs, shredded cucumber, carrots, and peanuts.

Although mala is typically an oily dish, we found that this bowl was surprisingly light on the grease, allowing us to finish this bowl without feeling too jelak. The mala sauce itself was quite spicy and numbing, but the shredded cucumbers and carrots helped to quell some of that burn.

We also ordered the Creamy Salted Egg Pan Mee (RM15.90+/~S$4.50+), a unique rendition of ban mian that could appeal to fans of salted egg.

The strong aroma of salted egg wafted through the air even before it was served. However, upon digging in, we thought there wasn’t enough sauce as the noodles were not coated evenly Nonetheless, we still enjoyed this unique find as it reminded us of salted egg pasta.

The Fried Dough Sticks (RM4.90+/~S$1.40+) here were more chewy than the typical you tiao we have at home. It also came drenched with condensed milk, resulting in a nice balance of sweet and savoury.

The eatery is air-conditioned, so you need not worry about dining in the sweltering Malaysian heat! Lao Ban Mian also has a few other outlets across JB, not too far from customs. If you’re craving a bowl of delicious pan mee in Malaysia, be sure to try them out!
