Le Bon Funk might be a familiar name to the wine lovers amongst us—the Club Street hangout is much loved for their selection of wines, served alongside a menu of uber tasty fare. This Friday, 10 March 2023, sees the opening of their second-ever location in Holland Village, taking over the idyllic corner where Fosters Steakhouse used to be.
For those of us who are always unlucky in scoring a reservation at Club Street, perhaps the opening of this second location means there’s more hope for us. You’ll have to note that most of the menu here is going to be brand new, though favourites such as their Beef Tongue And Gribiche Sandwich ($28++) will be available here—gribiche being a French egg sauce of emulsified hard-boiled egg yolks with oil, flavoured with herbs, and finished with chopped egg whites. Fancified egg mayo, in simpler terms.
Another super popular item that you’ll find across both locations is Cedar Jelly And Foie Gras Toast ($22+), where brioche toast is spread with a thin, floral-tasting layer of cedar jelly, then topped abundantly with grated frozen foie gras that melts in the mouth like butter, without the gamey, oily taste that some dislike about the delicacy.
On the list of starters, look forward to Burrata And Gremolata ($18++) or Half Artichoke And Kombu Aioli ($16++); otherwise the Turnips, Radishes, Lettuce And Dip ($16++), in spite of how basic its name may seem, sees a dip that’s made with tofu and sake.
If you’re steering away from the beef tongue sandwich, consider a Wagyu Beef Tartare, Nduja And Grilled Bread ($34++), nduja being a spicy Italian pork sausage. This differs from the Club Street version, which is mixed with fermented mushrooms and comes with chips on the side.
For mains, check out Sea Bass And Marinated Bull Horn Peppers ($48++), or Lamb Neck, Rapini And Gnocchi ($48++); otherwise there’s Heritage Chicken, Herbs de Provence And Ratatouille ($74++).
If you’ve previously been to Fosters Steakhouse, you’ll know to expect a long, narrow space, although Le Bon Funk has redone the space with a cleaner and brighter aesthetic. They’ve torn open the wall to construct a terrace running the length of the space, so you have a choice between indoor and patio seats.
