If you love cafes, you’d know that Joo Chiat is the place to be. As someone who lives in the East, I’m always on the lookout for new cafes in the area, so when I saw a long queue forming outside In Good Company‘s newly opened three-storey shophouse at 316 Joo Chiat Road, I had to go and kaypoh.
Turns out the queue was for Miura, a new Japanese tea and wagashi cafe opened by the same folks behind Paaru. The matcha stand is tucked away towards the back of the shop, on the ground floor, where the seating area and outdoor patio are.
Miura’s menu features a mix of Japanese teas paired with handcrafted Japanese confectionery, AKA wagashi. Highlights include the Matcha (from $7.50), freshly whisked to order, with a rich, umami-forward flavour and a pleasantly bitter finish.
If you’re in the mood for something refreshing, the Oolong Pear Cold Brew with Cheese Cloud ($10) comes with subtle pear notes and a thick layer of cheese foam on top, served unsweetened.
For something to munch on while you enjoy your tea, the Signature Fruit Daifuku ($7) and Coconut Warabimochi ($6) come highly recommended. The former features a whole fresh Japanese strawberry wrapped in soft, chewy mochi skin alongside smooth lotus paste, while the latter is an ondeh ondeh-inspired number with gula melaka syrup. Other sweets on the menu include the Black Sesame Kinako Cheese Slice ($8) and Earl Grey Milk Yokan ($6).
If you’ve got time to spare, head up to the second level, dedicated to In Good Company’s womenswear, menswear and accessories, or check out the loft on top, which is set aside for workshops and community programs.
