With the rain picking up lately, we’ve been craving some comforting, warm soup. That’s why the recent opening of Moon Moon, a Taiwanese chain known for its delicious soup dishes, at Ngee Ann City, feels like perfect timing.
While Moon Moon may be new to locals, Taiwanese foodies would be familiar with the restaurant chain, especially since it frequently features in their Michelin Bib Gourmand guide. This Singapore outpost is their first overseas location, so we visited to see if the soup here lives up to the massive hype it’s generated in Taiwan.
We started with one of the restaurant’s signature chicken soup dishes, the Peeled Chilli Pepper Chicken Soup ($18.80++). This soup dish was packed to the very brim, so much so that trying to scoop it out immediately caused some spillage. While this was surely evidence that there’s a generous amount of ingredients in the broth, we did find ourselves wondering why they didn’t simply just use a bigger bowl.
Anyway, the chicken soup was great. This was a refreshing and clear-tasting chicken broth with a subtle sweetness from the cabbage, balanced by a spicy kick that lingered at the back of your throat, courtesy of the pickled chilli.
There were a good amount of chicken pieces in the broth, all of which were juicy and tender. That’s about it when it comes to this soup—simple and what you’d call “healthy”, yet skillfully made and high-quality.
The next chicken soup we tried, the Sea Bass Soup with Clam ($25.80++), was a little more luxurious. When it arrived, it was impossible not to note how a sizeable chunk of seabass covered the bowl of soup—this required us to remove the fish to access what was beneath it.
The chicken broth here was even better than in the previous dish. It had a gingery warmth that paired beautifully with the natural sweetness of cabbage and the mild, savoury flavour of the chicken.
Each sip was also packed with the briny, umami flavour of lala clams, adding a subtle depth to the soup.
We also loved the sea bass, which was fresh, meaty, and infused with the goodness of the broth.
These chicken soup dishes can be paired with rice dishes, including the Glutinous Rice with Mushroom and Pork ($8.80++) and Braised Pork Rice ($6.80) AKA lu rou fan.
But we’re of the opinion that the noodle dishes here, such as the Shallot Oil Noodle ($12.80++) and Spicy Sesame Noodle ($13.80++), are even better. The latter is reminiscent of dan dan noodles with its nutty flavour and slightly spicy kick; yet, its thick, chewy noodles give it a unique character.
There’s a whole range of sides and appetisers you can get here as well. The Braised Dish Platter ($10.80) comes highly recommended—you can choose three items from a selection including Pork Large Intestines, Pork Ear, Bai Ye Tofu and more. As kway chap fans, we were impressed by the quality of the braising here, as well as the freshness of the innards.
The restaurant has minimal yet elegant-looking interiors, with plenty of wooden furnishing and spotlights to brighten up the dining area. Because the restaurant is quite spacious, you’re likely to feel quite comfortable dining here as well. You’ll find it an eight-minute walk away from Orchard MRT Station.
We think the chicken soup here is great, and the rest of their menu is pretty swell, too. Do check it out if you’re a fan of comforting soup dishes!
