This Under-HDB Kiosk Has $4.90 Drinks And Viral Duck Matcha, Accepts CDC Vouchers Too

MT Coffee is an affordable matcha stand in Toa Payoh

If you’ve been on Lemon8 or #CafeTok lately, you may have already spotted MT Coffee, a small coffee and matcha stand that’s been going viral for their affordable matcha lattes.

Tucked under a HDB block at 184 Toa Payoh Central, just a four-minute walk from Toa Payoh MRT Station, the stand is run by a couple from Hangzhou, China, who bring their own take on coffee and matcha to the neighbourhood.

Don’t expect anything aesthetic or overly fancy here; the stall is straightforward and easily identifiable by its bright green storefront and dog mascot logo. It’s more of a takeaway spot, but if you want to enjoy your drink on site, a few bench seats along the corridor make up most of the seating. You can order your drinks via QR code, and CDC vouchers are accepted too.

Their Duck Matcha ($5.90), dubbed the “lying duck matcha” on social media, is exactly as cute as it sounds. It features a thick, creamy matcha base topped with a fluffy matcha cloud, finished with a marshmallow duck. When I visited MT Coffee early this year, the matcha leaned more umami rather than bitter or grassy, making for an easy, palatable drink.

If you’d rather skip the marshmallow theatrics and just enjoy the matcha itself, I recommend the Iced Matcha ($4.90) or Strawberry Matcha ($5.90) for something tart.

The stall also serves coffee. The owners use a custom blend of five different Chinese coffee beans for their espresso; their latte is said to feature subtle floral and woody notes.

A popular pick is the Orange Sea (Iced) with Coffee ($5.90), which pairs citrus with espresso for a refreshing drink. There’s also the Mint Coconut Latte (Iced) ($5.50), which layers cooling mint with coconut milk, and the Pistachio Latte (Iced) with Coffee ($6.90), for those who prefer a nuttier, more indulgent brew.

If you’re feeling peckish, try their small selection of bakes. The Pan-Fried Pork Patty with Dried Mustard Greens ($3 each) features a pork filling with dried mustard greens, pan-fried until crispy on the outside. There’s also the Buttered Glutinous Rice Cakes 6Pcs ($7)—pan-seared rice cakes finished with a fragrant butter glaze.
