The Covid pandemic hit the F&B industry hard, leaving many victims in its wakeāNam Seng Wanton NoodleĀ was one such casualty, and many CBD workers were understandably heartbroken when the beloved wonton mee stall announced its closure in 2020. After a little more than a year, Nam Seng has returned, though itās now located in Che Kitchen, a coffeeshop in Toa Payoh North.
Helmed by 92 year-old Mdm Leong Yuet Ming, Nam Seng Wanton Noodle has been around for 60 years, first starting out at Stamford Road, before moving to Joo Chiat, and eventually settling in on China Street before they shut down in 2020.
According to this 8days article, Nam Seng Wanton Noodle begins operations at its new home today, with Mdm Leong, affectionately known as Ah Por, or Grandmother, still looking after the stall. It also appears that this is a franchise, though the prices remain the same as they were at the China Street outlet.
The dish that won Ah Por and Nam Seng Wanton Noodle their legions of fans is Wanton Noodle ($5), with its red-hued char siew, hand-wrapped wonton, and QQ egg noodles. If you havenāt tried it before, you can expect the noodles tossed in a light, oil-based sauce thatās old-school Singapore style in taste. If you prefer, you could also get it in soup.
Unfortunately, thatās the only item on the menu. Fans of Mdm Leongās Venison Horfun, Fried Rice, Seafood Horfun, and Soy Sauce Chicken Noodle will have to keep hoping that sheāll bring them back soon too.
While Mdm Leong might be the oldest hawker still working in Singapore today, you can still get flavours from the past at one of these oldest hawker stalls in Singapore. Otherwise, consider getting your briyani fix at Geylang (Hamidās) Briyani Stall, made with a recipe thatās 58 years old!
