It’s hard to find food that goes below $1 in Singapore these days, but there are a few hidden gems that do surface when you least expect them. One such stall is Nan Rong Chee Cheong Fun in Bendemeer Food Centre, a stall that has been open for over 20 years, selling freshly steamed chee cheong fun, fried bee hoon, and yam kueh.
The stall is run by an 82-year-old man and his elderly wife. Their bestseller is their $1 chee cheong fun, served simply with a side of sweet brown sauce. While HK-style and Malaysian-style chee cheong fun are all the rage these days in hawker centres, Nan Rong’s version truly goes back to the dish’s local roots.

Aside from the chee cheong fun, the stall also sells a selection of savoury dishes. Their yam kueh is a must-try, priced at just $0.80. They also have Nyonya dumplings, from $2.20.
Enjoy your steamed dishes along with their economical bee hoon. Noodles start at $1, and you can add on a selection of deep-fried items to your order, from sunny-side-up egg to ngoh hiang.

Pro-tip: you can mix and match here, so if you want your chee cheong fun served alongside ngoh hiang, or together with the yam cake, all doused in sweet sauce, you only have to ask.
Expect longer queues during breakfast and lunch times, but the lines tend to move fast.
For more food in the area, check out our Bendemeer Food Centre guide. There’s also Yong Xiang Carrot Cake in the same food centre, which sells carrot cake fried with soon kueh. Otherwise, we also have a guide on where to get chee cheong fun in Singapore.
