If you were to catch me with a friend or relative from overseas, chances are we would either be at Newton Food Centre or Chomp Chomp Food Centre. For the former, that’s pretty much the only time you’d finding me hanging out in the Newton area. Otherwise, I’ve always thought the place has nothing much to offer. That was until I decided to dig deep and look out for other food places aside from those in the food centre. Here are some eateries found near Newton MRT Station for the next time you find yourself there!

For a #treatyourself cheat meal, check out Smiths’ Cod or Haddock and Chips ($23+). Those who like your fish to have a melt-in-your-mouth texture, I’d suggest going for the cod. If you can’t decide between the two kinds of fish, the cafe also serves Fish Cake And Chips ($14++), which is made from a mix of haddock and cod, potato, and flecked parsley. Other popular alternatives include Pork Chop Cutlet With Chips ($15+) and Sausage And Chips ($16.50+), where you can choose to have your sausage battered.

Back in my secondary school days, Waffletown was where I settled most of my meals at. Most days, I’d hop in to get their Single Scoop Ice Cream Waffle ($4.20) or Combo Waffle ($5.80), which comes with egg, ham, bacon, and sausage. Although the place specialises in waffles, an equally popular dish is Clucky Lucky Fried Chicken ($4.90 for two pieces). If you are looking for full meals, some value-for-money plates you can find include Black Pepper Steak ($7.80), BBQ Chilli Fish with Butter Rice ($7.80), and Super Value Meal ($6.20), which comes with a fried chicken leg, butter rice, sunny side up, and a soft drink.

Started in 1998 with just three items on their menu, The Big Bird now serves more than 30 dishes. They specialise in Chicken Rice ($6.80), which also comes in double ($13.60) and triple ($20.40) portions for small groups. Similar to a zi char stall, The Big Bird also serves up a variety of seafood such as Chilli Prawn ($14), Assam Fishhead ($28), and Crab Bee Hoon ($48/$58). For something less common, you can try their Ayam Buah Keluak ($18) and Nyonya Popiah ($5.80)!

A five-minute walk away from Newton MRT Station is Daily Affairs Dining & Bar, a cafe specialising in Asian-Western fusion cuisine. One of the top recommended dishes is their Sous Vide Chicken Laksa ($11.50) that comes in a clay pot packed with chicken, thick bee hoon, tau pok, bean sprouts, fishcakes, and thick gravy. Those looking for slightly healthier options can go for their Smoked Duck Salad with Soba ($12.50) or Atlantic Pink Salmon ($15.50), which is glazed with honey miso to give a hint of sweetness.
