This $1.90 Chicken Rice In AMK Might Be The Cheapest In SG

Nguan Express 88 has $1.90 chicken rice in Ang Mo Kio

The cheapest chicken rice I’ve ever come across is at Fook Seng GoldenHill Chicken Rice, where you can get a plate for just $2—that is, until I went to Nguan Express 88. This stand-alone hawker stall in Ang Mo Kio sees long queues every day, mainly because of their $1.90 chicken rice.

For $1.90, you get a plate of fragrant rice with a good serving of roasted or soy chicken and sliced cucumbers. They also include a bag of chilli sauce, though I didn’t see any dark soya sauce around.

Do note that all meals are served in a takeaway box, as there are only three tables right outside the stall with very limited seats.

I’ll be honest: when I was queuing up, I wasn’t expecting much. How good can $1.90 chicken rice be, really? But I was surprised by how generous and delicious my box of chicken rice looked, and after taking a glance at other customers digging into their cheap meal, my curiosity was piqued.

This was a decent plate of chicken rice, especially for such an affordable price. The rice was moist and flavourful, though there were some dry, hardened bits that were a tad difficult to chew.

You don’t get to choose your preferred cut of meat; for my order, I was given the chicken breast. As with most breast meat, the chicken wasn’t the most tender or juicy, but it helped that the meat was thinly sliced.

I also recommend drenching your chicken in their chilli sauce as the spice is bearable. Plus, it helps to soften the meat!

Nguan Express 88 is conveniently located seven minutes away from Ang Mo Kio MRT Station by foot, and it’s in the vicinity of AMK Hub, if that helps. My colleague and I visited during lunch hours, and there was a long queue ahead of us. But fret not, as the queue moves pretty fast—I managed to get my chicken rice in less than 15 minutes of waiting.
