Nosignboard Sheng Jian Opens In Yishun With Chilli Crab Sheng Jian Bao, Purple Sweet Potato Balls And More

Nosignboard Sheng Jian at Northpoint City

No Signboard Group, an organisation that previously brought in F&B brands such as Mom’s Touch and Little Sheep Hot Pot, has opened a new restaurant named nosignboard Sheng Jian at Northpoint City.

It has a menu featuring a range of Northern Chinese-style dim sum, appetisers, mains and more. But what’s special here is the Sheng Jian Bao, one of Shanghai’s most popular and iconic items.

If you’ve never heard of a sheng jian bao before, it’s a pan-fried bao with a meat or vegetable filling. There are four flavours available at nosignboard Sheng Jian: Signature “Popping Juices” ($5.50+), Chili Crab and Pork ($6.30+), Spicy Dried Shrimp ($5.80+), and Vegan Sheng Jian Bao ($5.30+), all of which come in threes. If you can’t decide, opt for the Tricolour Sheng Jian Bao ($10.80+), which includes their Signature “Popping Juices”, Chilli Crab and Pork, and Vegan Sheng Jian Bao.

We recommend their Signature “Popping Juices” which comes with a savoury minced meat centre and a flavoursome broth, reminiscent of xiao long bao. However, be careful when you dig in, as the soup within is piping hot when it’s served!

If you are looking for a full meal experience, we recommend starting off with the Spicy Chicken in ‘Sichuan’ Style ($7.80+), and the Deep-fried Radish Pastry ($5.80+) for appetisers. The former comes as a plate of succulent chicken, doused in a Sichuan mala sauce. It is savoury, spicy, and numbing, all in one bite, and it’ll surely whet your appetite.

The Deep-fried Radish Pastry, on the other hand, is a savoury yet slightly sweet appetiser. It features long strips of radish wrapped in an extremely flaky pastry.

For mains, try the Famous Wu Xi Braised Pork Cube ($14.80+), which consists of big, chunky pork belly cubes, coated in a sweet and sharp vinegar-based sauce. To complete this meal, top up $5.50+ for a bowl of white rice, a sheng jian bao of the day, two mini side dishes, and a dessert of the day.

Alternatively, you can pair your main dishes with their rice or noodle options. Consider the Dried Noodles with Scallion & Dried Shrimps ($6.80+) for something comforting or the Crispy Rice with Chili Crab Meat Sauce ($14.80+) for a less filling option. The latter comes with a bowl of shelled crabmeat in the classic sweet-spicy gravy, served with blocks of crispy rice snacks on the side. I’ve never had chilli crab done like this—paired with these lighty, airy squares of crispy rice—but I enjoyed the textural contrast greatly.

As with the main dishes, you can top up $4.50+ to complete your rice or noodle dish with a sheng jian bao, two side dishes, and a dessert of the day.

To finish off your meal on a sweet note, consider the Chilled Coconut Papaya Pudding or the Crispy Purple Sweet Potato Balls, both of which are priced at $4.80+ for three pieces. Do consume the potato ball while it’s warm to enjoy a creamy, custard-filled dessert.

As it’s a self-service eatery, prices at Nosignboard Sheng Jian are free of service charge. You have to pay when you order, but the process is streamlined with a digital monitor that flashes your queue number when your order is ready. The restaurant is rather small, and it gets busy during lunchtime, so expect a queue when you visit!
