Stretchy, chewy, smooth, and silky are the defining characteristics that make mochi desserts so popular. These days, you can get your fix of the Japanese rice cake in all forms imaginable, from mochi-filled waffles to warabimochi-laden drinks. But if you’re looking for something a lot more fun yet wallet-friendly, Nuo Yuan Mochi in Johor Bahru specialises in customisable mochi!

How the DIY mochi works: you choose from 20 fillings such as yam paste, red bean paste, purple potato paste, or black sesame paste. You can also stuff your mochi with fresh fruit such as mango and strawberry, as well as vanilla and chocolate ice cream if you’d like. The end result is something similar to a daifuku. Prices start from RM3 for one filling, and go up to RM7 for three fillings.

Then, dress them up with Oreo or Biscoff crumbs, cream cheese, or even savoury options such as pork floss and salted egg yolk. No matter what combination you come up with, each mochi is freshly wrapped and made on the spot, according to exactly how you order it.

The extent of this shop’s mochi offerings does not just stop here. They also have a crowd-favourite crispy and chewy, fried mochi (price TBD) that come in flavours such as peanut, seaweed, chicken floss, cheese, and sambal. Else, there’s also an extensive selection of hot mochi (price TBD) and ice mochi (price TBD) desserts.

Nuo Yuan Mochi is located at Mount Austin, a popular spot in JB, known for its bustling cafe culture. They are relatively hidden since they are tucked behind a laundromat, so hurry down before this kiosk gets more popular!
