The re-opening of Singpost Centre has brought upon tons of great eats at Paya Lebar last year. This is on top of the food at neighbouring shopping malls such as OneKM, City Plaza and Paya Lebar Square! If you are around the area and looking for food, these 10 Paya Lebar food joints won’t disappoint.

1. Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle

My friends are always raving about this hidden gem at City Plaza, Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle. The stall doesn’t look anything spectacular, but it seems for ban mian lovers, their noodles are to die for. A must is their Home Made Noodle with Prawn (from $3), which comes with thick flat and chewy noodles, plump prawns, mushrooms and minced meat. They also have other items such as Abalone Soup ($20) that’s brimming with slices of abalone, prawns, and minced pork.

2. Upot

Upot combines the fun of cooking your own food with the concept of a conveyor belt restaurant. Pick your ingredients off the conveyor belt, where the colour of the plates indicate the price: green ($0.99++), orange ($1.99++), blue ($2.99++), and red ($3.99++). Then, cook your selected items in one of their six delicious soup bases, including Taiwanese Herbal Pork Rib Soup ($8.80++) and Thai Tom Yum ($7.80++).

3. Don Lechon

If you’re hankering for legit Filipino grub, visit Don Lechon. Lechon, which refers to roasted pig, is the highlight of this restaurant. An entire pig is cooked over a charcoal spit, and is only chopped up upon order. The meat is soft, with a crackling layer of skin – better than any sio bak we’ve tasted. A single portion with rice starts from $9.50, but if you’re coming in a big group, I’d advise you to get the 1kg portion at $38.

4. Nuodle

There’s a reason why Nuodle draws a crowd – their la mian is delicious! There are only three noodles dishes on the menu, namely Signature Beef La Mian ($8.80), Seafood La Mian ($8.80), and Cool Mixed La Mian ($9.90). The former features a clear broth boasting a robust beefiness, as well as thin and lean beef slices that have small amounts of fats and soft bones.

5. Kazu Kazu

Kazu Kazu serves up scrummy donburi bowls. A dish that did not disappoint was their Pork Belly Mentai Mayo Don ($9.80+), which came with sauteed pork belly slices and onions on a bed of Japanese short-grain rice. The drizzle of mentaiko mayo was also slightly torched, giving the entire dish a subtle smoky aroma. They also have other items on the menu such as Unagi Don ($13.80+) and Yakiniku Don ($8.80+).

6. Chicken Run

Chicken Run specialises in claypot chicken dishes. What we like about this restaurant is that you can customise your dishes in many ways including choosing the level of spiciness or adding more ingredients. A must-try is their Laksa Pot ($17.90+/$23.90+/$32.90+), which is rich and creamy, with chunks of chicken, tau pok and beancurd skin.

7. 5 Little Bears

Have your fill of Taiwanese street food at 5 Little Bears. The cosy eatery is best known for their Taichung Braised Pork Rice ($5) that comes with chopped up braised pork belly, pickled mustard greens, half a braised egg and bok choy. They also have other items too, including Taipei Oyster Mee Sua ($4.50) and crispy XL Chicken Chop ($4.80).

8. Arnold’s Fried Chicken

There’s a reason why homegrown fast food joint Arnold’s Fried Chicken always has a long queue. Fried until crisp, prepare to get your fingers dirty, as you devour their juicy fried chicken wings. They have a few combo meals available; the two person combo meal ($24.60) comes with five pieces of chicken, fries, coleslaw, two buns and two soft drinks.

9. Mr and Mrs Mohgan’s Super Crispy Prata

A 15-minute walk away from Paya Lebar MRT Station is Mr and Mrs Mohgan Super Crispy Prata. Just like its name suggests, the Kosong Crispy Prata ($0.90) is pan-fried until golden brown and features a crispy exterior, with soft, fluffy layers within. The complimentary curries that come with the prata include fish curry and dalcha. The latter has an earthy taste of lentils, and was not spicy.

10. Little Vietnam

When you’re dining at Little Vietnam, a must-order appetiser is their Fried Spring Rolls ($5 for five pieces) that are stuffed with chicken, glass noodles and vegetables, before being fried. They also have unique dishes such as Deep-fried Quail ($15) as well as more common ones including chicken and beef pho (from $6)!
