Ramen King: $8 Tonkotsu Ramen, Cheese Gyoza And More At This New Hawker Stall In Tampines

From traditional ramen by Japanese chefs to newfangled variants with fusion flavours, we’re in no shortage of ramen options here. But it’s not every day that you come across a  ramen stall in a coffeeshop setting, selling a piping bowl of legit Japanese noods at just $8 a pop. Started by a former chef from popular Hokkaido ramen chain Ramen Santouka, Ramen King offers that and more.

The new hawker stall sits in an unassuming location in a coffeeshop along Tampines Street 81, but it seems to have already drawn a fair amount of crowd in its opening week, with queues for their Tonkotsu Ramen.

According to Chef Simon Song, their signature Tonkotsu broth is made from scratch with a four-step preparation method, which involves letting it rest at intervals over three days. At the final stage, the broth is laid down in a room at 25 degrees Celcius for half a day. The tedious process results in a light yet umami pork bone broth that’s layered with flavours. Their yellow egg noodles are said to be made with two types of wheat for a slight chew, and a satisfying texture.

Those who want a punchier flavour can try their Kurobuta Toroniku Spicy Miso Ramen ($15), which pairs the creamy Tonkotsu broth with a kick of spice, along with slices of slow-cooked roasted pork AKA char-siu.

If you’re still peckish, get a side of Cheese Gyoza ($6 for five) to share. Alternatively, share the regular Gyoza ($5.50 for five) for a more classic taste.

Easties can get to Ramen King via a 10-minute walk from Tampines West MRT Station, or a short bus ride from Tampines MRT Station. Those who prefer to stay at home can opt for delivery on GrabFood and Foodpanda.
