If youāve been to Tokyo, Japan, you may have come across Sakanoue Cafe. This popular Japanese brand, known for their kakigori AKA shaved ice, arrived in Singapore permanently this April 2025!
You can now find Sakanoueās famous kakigori at Drips Bakery Cafeās Tiong Bahru outlet along Tiong Poh Road, available from 1pm to 9pm daily. A special ice machine was flown in from Japan to create a melt-in-the-mouth texture for the shaved ice desserts.
The showstopping Blazing Fire Cheese ($19.80+) comprised a mountain of shaved ice topped with cheese, espuma camembert, camembert cheese sauce, raw honey, and mixed nuts. The cheese was torched on the spot upon being served, creating a rich, caramelly flavour that paired well with the refreshing base.
We found the texture of the shaved ice meltingly soft, but not as fine as what youād get in a Korean bingsu.
We couldnāt resist trying the adorable Sakanoue Berry Cute Panda ($18+) as well, which came with the same toppings as Blazing Fire Cheese, as well as a foam-like mousse made from camembert cheese, crumbled cookies, yoghurt, and mixed berries. I preferred this dessert for its sweet and savoury flavour profile. It had a stronger cheese taste than the previous one, so we recommend it only if you like rich flavours.Ā
For something without cheese, try the Classic Strawberry Shortcake ($17.50+) instead, which comes with milk syrup, tangy strawberry sauce, and fresh whipped cream. Alternatively, a must-try is the Singapore-exclusive Signature Blackforest ($19.80+), which features kakigori served with tart cherry brandy.
You canāt leave without trying some of Drips Bakery Cafeās mouthwatering pastries. The Okonomiyaki Danish ($5+) was absolutely delicious; the flaky and chewy pastry paired well with the sweet-savoury chicken yakitori filling, creamy Japanese mayo, sweet teriyaki sauce, and bonito flakes. It was almost like having a takoyaki but in croissant form!
Another must-try is the Black Sesame Mochi Danish ($5.50+), a crispy laminated pastry filled with black sesame paste and stretchy mochi. Though this pastry was slightly cloying, the textural contrast between the chewy mochi and the crispy, flaky layers gave us enough reason to return for seconds.
Sakanoue Cafe is a convenient 10-minute bus ride from Tiong Bahru MRT Station. The cosy 60-seater, tucked away in the quiet, beautiful Tiong Bahru neighbourhood, makes it a perfect spot for a chill catch-up with friends.
FYI, from 4 April to 20 April 2025, enjoy 15% off all bakes at Drips Bakery Cafe with every purchase of Sakanoueās kakigori.
In related dessert news, Sweedy Patisserie now has the viral banana pudding matcha. Alternatively, if youāre looking for more food around the area, read our Tiong Bahru food guide or guide to the best food at Tiong Bahru Market.
