There are a handful of fish and chips eateries in Singapore, but not many serve up a legit, British-approved version. Enter Smiths Authentic British Fish and Chips, a popular eatery in Balmoral Plaza that has been around since 2006!

The casual diner is run by its two British founders, who claim that Smiths is “the only true authentic British fish and chip shop in Singapore”. It sits on the ground floor of the Bukit Timah mall, and offers both indoor and alfresco seating options.

If it’s your first time visiting, try their signature Cod or Haddock & Chips (Standard) ($29.50+). This features lightly battered and deep-fried fish—choose from cod or haddock—made using the founder’s grandfather’s secret recipe from the 1950s. The UK-imported fish is said to be crispy on the outside and meaty within, while the chips on the side are also prepared fresh on-site each day.

Those who aren’t that hungry can opt for a smaller portion at $26.50+!

Besides fish and chips, the eatery offers British classics such as Steak And Guinness Pie & Chips ($25.80+), a hearty pie starring beef chunks in Guinness-infused gravy. Their English Cottage Pie ($22.50+) is another crowd favourite that features minced beef cooked in a rich gravy, topped with mashed potato and cheese.

There’s also the quintessential Bangers & Mash ($25.80+): buttery mashed potatoes, caramelised onions, and English sausages served with gravy, along with mushy peas on the side.

If you’re planning to take public transport, Newton MRT Station, an 11-minute walk away, is the nearest train station.
