Super Thai by Soi Aroy probably needs little introduction. Its parent restaurant, Soi Aroy, has amassed a host of glowing reviews from hundreds of satisfied diners, earning them the title of highest-rated Thai restaurant on Tripadvisor.
Super Thai isn’t too different. With near-perfect ratings on Google reviews across both their existing outlets, it’s clearly a successful spinoff concept. So when we were invited to their Aljunied outlet to sample their food, I was more than eager to head down.
Branching off from Soi Aroy, which sees more traditional Thai dishes on their menu, Super Thai prides itself on serving Thai cuisine with a modern twist. One of these is the Signature Crispy Papaya Salad with Soft-Shell Crab ($17++/$26++), served with a sweet and spicy sauce.
Here, papaya strips hardly resemble the original fruit. Instead, they’re deep-fried to achieve an extra-satisfying crunchy texture. Together with the similarly crispy soft-shell crab, this dish was simply a textural delight.
Likewise, the Crispy Deep-Fried Omelette with Crab Meat ($17++) was, as its name suggests, incredibly crispy.
Compared to the usual French-style omelette where ingredients are folded inside of the egg, this is more like a nest of egg floss topped with chunks of crab meat. While I enjoyed this dish, it felt a little dry, especially after the deep-fried papaya salad.
The Super Thai Premium Hotpot ($20++/$37++) remedied this though: comprising hot and sour tom yum soup and a variety of seafood such as squid, prawn, and mussels served in a fire pot, it was a comforting dish that complemented the rest of the meal.
I liked that the tom yum was well-balanced—sweet, sour, and with just enough spice to be punchy without being overwhelming.
Up next was the Soi Aroy Signature Mixed Meat Platter ($16++/$30++). Featuring moo ping, grilled chicken and pork jowl torched tableside, it’s a convenient way to sample all of the restaurant’s signature meats while leaving room for other dishes.
The moo ping had a good balance of sweet and savoury from the marinade, while the grilled chicken was tender and juicy. My favourite, though, was the pork jowl, as it was fatty with an almost melt-in-your-mouth texture.
I never had raw oysters before this, but I was glad to have tried them at Super Thai. I was worried I’d be put off by the characteristic “fishy” taste, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Super Thai Premium Oysters ($27++ for 6 pieces) here were fresh, plump, and succulent, with just the right amount of brininess.
The lemon and chilli sauces served on the side also helped to counter any overwhelming briny notes. Combined, they were a good mixture of tangy and spicy, adding some much-needed flavour to the oysters.
My favourite dish of the meal was Claypot Glass Noodle with King Prawns ($14++/$21++). The flavours from the soya sauce, garlic, and ginger were properly infused in the springy glass noodles, and there was also a perceptible smokiness that’s often missing in other renditions of this dish.
The prawns were fresh and meaty too. Served with their shells partially cut open, it was easy to enjoy the flesh of the prawn without expending much effort.
To end our meal off on a sweet note, we got a Soi Aroy Thai Iced Tea ($4++) and Signature Aurora Cooler ($4++).
I appreciated that I could choose the sugar levels for the Thai iced tea here, as I find that Thai iced teas elsewhere tend to be a little too sweet for me.
The Aurora Cooler, on the other hand, is basically a lemonade with the addition of butterfly pea flowers, which gives it its distinct blue and purple colour. It’s a lighter and refreshing alternative for those who aren’t fans of milk tea.
Decked out in modern, black decor and accented with bright neon signs, Super Thai is casual but polished. Along with the spacious booth seats that line the corners, it feels like a great place to gather with friends or family.
Super Thai is surrounded by several MRT stations, with Mattar MRT Station being the closest at a 14-minute walk away. Other stations such as Potong Pasir, Aljunied, or Tai Seng MRT Station are a 15- to 20-minute bus ride away.
Super Thai By Soi Aroy serves up legit Thai cuisine and fresh seafood for pretty reasonable prices. It may be a little out of the way, but I wouldn’t mind travelling to pay them another visit. I’d certainly recommend them to anyone looking for good Thai food in Singapore.
