Supernova Cafe In Katong Has Gorgeous Decor And Brunch Fare, Run By Folks Behind Apollo Coffee Bar

Supernova cafe in Katong has brunch and great coffee

The Atlas Coffeehouse group is behind some of the most popular cafes and coffeehouses in Singapore. You’re probably familiar with Columbus Coffee Co. in Upper Thompson, Apollo Coffee Bar in Serangoon Gardens, Neptune in East Coast, Lunar Coffee Brewers in OUE Downtown Gallery, and now, Supernova in Katong.

Supernova is barely a year old, but has become a new brunchtime favourite in the Katong hood. The cafe occupies the lower half of an old conservation building along Tanjong Katong, and has spacious indoor, as well as outdoor dining areas.

The alfresco area sports tiled floors and table sets reminiscent of Parisian bistros. Inside, a wall-to-wall wooden bar counter takes centre stage, lit by warm light fixtures. The rest of the space is cosy but not crowded—think dark wood chairs, plush booth seats, and marble-topped tables, lit by the glow from the striking chandelier above.

The menu is divided into two. By day, diners can expect homely brunch options as well as specialty coffee. By night, the menu flip-flops to offer okonomiyaki, burgers, grilled meats, cocktails, and natural wines.

We were there for brunch, which runs between 8am to 5pm, and ordered a mix of sweet and savoury dishes. The Fried Chicken French Toast ($24.50++) was the unanimous favourite, thanks to the eggy shokupan toast grilled just-so, and the golden-brown crust of the fried chicken tenders.  Hot maple syrup laced with chilli flakes and a compound garlic butter are served alongside, delivering the one-two punch of sweet and spicy that really elevated the dish.

For something heartier, get the Steak Hash ($26.90++). 180g of cubed steak is served on a green sauce akin to a richer salsa verde, then dressed with organic sunny-side-up eggs, kale, and red onions. Instead of hash potatoes, you get crispy-skinned, well-seasoned potato cubes that we thought were the star of the dish.

Supernova has two Baked Eggs on the menu, succinctly titled #1 ($24.50++), and #2 ($24.50++). We tried #1, which comes with a custard-like cauliflower mash, cubes of bacon, organic jammy eggs, and portobello mushrooms. A slice of focaccia and a drizzle of truffle oil finishes the dish. If you’re a fan of cream and truffle, this might be up your alley, though we found it just a bit too rich.

The Super Nutty ($16.40++) is our pick for a sweet start to the morning. The acai bowl is elevated with fresh fruit, cocoa nibs, and almond butter, then speckled with a generous amount of crunchy granola. Light, fresh, and cold, this hits the spot, especially on warmer days.

No trip to Supernova cafe is complete without coffee or tea. They’ve got quite an extensive menu of beverages. Their Flat White ($6.60++), made with a house roast known as Mr Cuddles. The fruity, chocolatey combination of beans sourced from Guatemala and Brazil is a straightforward choice, else you can enjoy the blend in the likes of their flavoured lattes.

They also serve up bottled cold brews, caffeine-free chocolate drinks, brewed teas, and house-made kombuchas, as well as a water kefir!

All in all, Supernova cafe is a great addition to the Katong food roster, so definitely swing by if you’re in the East looking for a chill place that serves quality food and coffee.
