1. 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles

545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles is run by a finance graduate turned third-generation hawker, Li Ruifang. Her recipe for prawn noodles was passed down to her from her grandfather. Prices here go at $5 a portion, and you can zhng up your bowl with extra prawns for $2 or additional sliced pork at $1. The old-school hae mee contains an even mixture of yellow noodles and bee hoon tossed in a fiery yet flavourful sambal gravy, and topped with peeled prawns. Finally, the noodles are garnished with dried shallots and served with a bowl of soup.

Queues start from as early as 7am, so make sure you head down early!

2. Imaroy Thai Food

Amidst the rows of hawker stalls in Tekka Centre lies Imaroy Thai Food. This is a great place to visit for your fill of cheap and savoury Thai cuisine. I recommend the Mango Salad ($4) to whet your appetite before digging into the following main dishes: Olive Fried Rice ($5), Seafood Fried Rice ($4.50) and Phad Thai ($4.50). Dishes are known for their immense flavour and affordable prices, so head down to try for yourself!

3. Grandma Mee Siam

What draws the crowd to Grandma Mee Siam is obvious enough. A plate of Mee Siam here sells for only $3 while their fried items are said to be delicious too! They have a myriad of ingredients for you to choose from, such as fishballs, pork liver, and even century egg! Prices for their range from $0.40 to $4, making it really affordable! A must-get is their Ngoh Hiang ($1.20), that is packed to the brim with meaty goodness inside! Make sure you visit before the lunch crowd streams in.

4. Temasek Indian Rojak

There’s no way I’d leave Little India without indulging in some good ol’ Indian rojak! Ask around in Tekka Centre and most would likely point you in the direction of Temasek Indian Rojak. Prices start at $1 per item, and there’s a minimum of four pieces per order. You can get bites such as tempeh ($1), fishball ($1.50), and even cuttlefish ($2)!

Everything is well-prepared and tasty, from the generous buffet-like spread of crispy, battered rojak ingredients to the sweet and piquant dipping sauce. They even have three different types of crunchy prawn fritters to offer!

5. Generation Coffee

New-age kopi stall Generation Coffee came in third in our best kopi guide for good reason. The homegrown brand is known for brewing their coffee using an espresso machine instead of the old-school kopi sock. This results in a beautiful, fragrant crema layer in each cup. Get the Kopi C Siew Dai ($1.60), a perfect mix of evaporated milk with freshly pulled espresso, or go for something fancier such as the Iced Dirty Matcha ($4): earthy matcha, espresso, and milk.

6. Ar-Rahman Cafe

Drinks stall Ar-Rahman Cafe prides itself as a “ginger tea and chendol specialist”, although it’s mostly their chendol that I can’t resist. The chendol is priced at $2, but if you’d like to spice your dessert up a notch, opt for their Durian Chendol ($2.80), or their Power Chendol ($2.80), which includes red bean and attap seeds. The stall uses gula melaka in their chendol and allows you to select your desired sugar level out of five levels.

7. Chuan’s Ladle

New to Tekka Centre is Chuan’s Ladle, a family-run stall specialising in Ladle Cakes ($2.50), made with a treasured recipe from the 1950s. Choose from three flavours: Original, Spicy, and Coriander. These snacks are said to be similar to prawn fritters, but come with shredded turnip, tau kway, and pork instead, for a more affordable price point. Each cake is coated in batter and deep-fried to crispy perfection. You’ll also find Scallion Oil Noodles ($1.50) served at the stall, should you wish to fill up on more carbs.

8. Allauddin’s Briyani Pte Ltd

Allaudin’s Briyani Pte Ltd calls themselves a briyani specialist and, true to their name, long snaking queues form outside their stall for their Mutton Briyani Set ($7), which comes with an egg and papadum. Without a doubt, it is the quality basmati rice flavoured with Indian herbs and spices, and crunchy cashew nuts, which make the dish so delectable. You can also choose to add an XL piece of fried chicken or fish for $4! Allauddin’s Briyani Pte Ltd has received so much recognition that it was awarded a Michelin Plate, which is why it’s earned a spot on our list of 20 best briyani in Singapore to try.

You can get their popular rice set, such as the Chilli Chicken Set or the Chicken Curry Set, both priced at $7.50. If not, you can also get snacks such as Pol Roti, a coconut-flavoured prata, for $3.50.

10. Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice

You may find Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice’s signboard a little misleading, as it no longer sells goose due to restrictions by the AVA. Apparently, this has not affected business as customers love their traditional Teochew-style braised duck rice. A plate of Duck Rice for one costs $4, and you can add on sides such as duck liver, tofu and braised egg. The duck rice is also accompanied by a bowl of rich herbal soup. Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice was also mentioned in the Michelin Guide!

Each appam is made freshly upon order, and they offer flavours such as Chocolate ($3), Cheese ($2.50), or Egg ($2.50). Besides, they also sell Thosai (price TBD), with ingredients including ghee, masala, or onions. Pair your meal with a masala tea for the complete experience!

Even if you’re not a fishball noodle connoisseur, you must have still heard of Ming Fa Fishball, a popular stall with multiple outlets island-wide. Get their Chicken Chop Minced Meat Noodles ($5) that is served with a generous amount of ingredients as well as a massive portion of fried chicken. If you want something spicy, try their Laksa ($3) that is cooked in a thick, coconut broth. Add their sambal for a punch!

14. Neha Tiffin Centre

With its affordable prices and extensive menu, Neha Tiffin Centre remains a popular choice for those looking to satisfy their prata cravings. Here, you can get thosai with fillings such as Egg Masala ($3), Onion ($2.50), or Plain ($2). Snacks including Vadai ($0.50) or Samosa ($1) are also available, but their most popular choice is the Putu Mayam ($2 for 3 pieces) paired with orange palm sugar. Afterwards, you can choose any ingredient you like from their selection, such as Luncheon Meat, Hot Dog, and Egg (prices TBD). While ingredients can be slightly greasy, the taste makes up for it as it is highly reminiscent of the olden days.
