Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry To Close Soon, Get Your Old-School Kueh Before It’s Too Late

Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry closing

Another one bites the dust when much-beloved old-school bakery Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry pulls down its shutters for a final time sometime this June or July 2022.

The family-run business has been around since the 1970s, churning out traditional Nyonya kueh and baked goods six days a week for legions of loyal fans. If you have ever received one of their plastic tubs of cookies with the recognisable red pull-tag lids and gold-foiled text at Chinese New Year, you’ll probably be receiving something different come next January.

Citing the impending sale of their unit as the trigger behind this decision to close shop, a family representative from Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry also mentioned how they will potentially be retiring from kueh-making and baking.

For those who are unfamiliar with the brand, you’ll definitely have to try their Ondeh-Ondeh that’s one of more than 20 assorted traditional kueh they make fresh daily.

Other noteworthy kueh is Putu Ayu, or steamed coconut pandan sponge cakes shaped like mini bundts, topped with grated coconut and gula melaka. There’s also their popular Kueh Dada, which features similar flavours of pandan, coconut, and gula melaka—albeit in a rolled pancake form.

Whether you are after Kueh Salat, Kueh Kosui, Kueh Ambon, Lemper Ayam, Kueh Lapis, or even Ang Ku Kueh, you can be sure to find them here, and all are priced under $5.

On the baked goods front, one of their most popular cookies is the Biscotti, a twice-baked traditional Italian almond biscuit that resembles mini slices of sliced baguette. Of course, there are others such as Coffee Almond and Cornflake Raisin cookies too.

Then, there are the cakes: Pandan Chiffon, old-school Butter Cake and Fruit Cake, Swiss Roll, and more.

While it’s unclear if this will be a temporary or permanent closure of business, what we do know is that the clock is ticking on the days they have remaining at their current location.

If you’re looking to avoid the impending crowds at Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry, here’s a list of other old-school bakeries you can head to while they’re still around. If not, head to any of these cafe-alternatives while you’re in the Tiong Bahru ‘hood.
