If you love churros, here’s a name you want to remember: Twist & Buckle. Hailing from Hong Kong, this popular brand was listed in Hong Kong’s Michelin Guide for two consecutive years, from 2023 to 2024, as the island’s “favourite street food”. They recently opened their first international venture in Singapore at Velocity @ Novena Square, serving freshly made churros!
There are two kinds of churros here, the Original Mini ($2.50) and Glazed Regular ($6.90). The former comes dusted with cinnamon sugar, and you can pay an additional $1 for a dipping sauce: chocolate, hazelnut, or dulce de leche.
Though the original churros were delicious in their own right, we recommend getting the glazed ones for something different. There are 10 flavours to choose from, with the Pistachio Crunch, Cookies and Cream, and Crunchy Matcha said to be steady sellers.
A collective favourite among our team was the Pistachio Crunch, which featured creamy pistachio paste and chopped pistachio bits. Best eaten hot, we were impressed with how crispy the dough was on the outside while maintaining an airy, fluffy texture within.
Adding the Fruity Pebbles cereal to the Crunchy Matcha churros was smart; the sweet cereal bits helped mellow down the bitter, earthy tones of the tea and added another layer of crunch that made the treat even crispier.
The Campfire, starring dark chocolate sauce with toasted marshmallows, is another flavour worth trying. Alternatively, consider the Wonderland, a pretty combination of strawberry chocolate sauce and rainbow sprinkles, and Hazel Lah, consisting of creamy hazelnut sauce and chopped hazelnuts.
If you’re buying to share, we recommend getting the Party Box 2 ($25.90), which comes in a box of seven flavours of your choice.
Twist & Buckle’s churros are some of the better ones we’ve had in Singapore. They’re definitely worth a shot if you’re in the area!
Another interesting way to enjoy the dessert is to pair a cup of soft serve ($2.90) with your churros. There’s only one combination to choose from each time, which changes now and then. During our visit, we tried a milk soft serve topped with Crunchy Matcha churros, a matcha Kit Kat, and a chewy mochi round.
Twist & Buckle is located at Velocity@Novena Square, directly connected to Novena MRT Station. FYI, the churros brand is in the process of getting halal certified. In the meantime, they are known to be Muslim-friendly with no pork or lard used in their ingredients.
