Velocity@Novena Square Food Guide: 8 Family-Friendly Places Including Yakiniku Buffet And DIY Burgers

Velocity@Novena Square food guide

This EOY, travel plans may be shelved, but it doesn’t mean we can’t send our appetites on a trip around the world! Bring the kids to Velocity@Novena Square during the year-end school holidays, and celebrate the end of the year with a feast at this family-friendly mall.

1. Fatburger & Buffalo’s

Fatburger is an American-style burger joint bound to excite one and all, thanks to their extensive menu. They have customisable burgers, wings, fries, onion rings, and milkshakes ($6.50) made with hand-scooped real ice cream. This all-American chain was founded in 1952, and till this day promises only the freshest, never-frozen ingredients in all their food, all made to order.

If a regular single patty is never enough, the whopping Triple (XXXL) Fatburger ($16.50) should do the trick. Pile on the protein and carbs with a Chilli Cheese Fries ($5.90) on the side. For the non-burger eater, there’s always Buffalo’s Chicken Bone-In Wings (from $7) from Buffalo’s Express, a co-brand that shares the limelight with Fatburger. Pick from eight different sauces in varying levels of spiciness, or get them without. The wings come in a Buffalo’s Boneless Chicken (from $7.50) option, and there’s also salad for a less sinful meal.

2. Fish & Co.

For those of us old enough, homegrown fish and chips chain Fish & Co. may be most fondly remembered for its Glass House outlet along Orchard Road. Bring your kids and give them the same happy memories at this branch, situated behind the multi-storied glass facade of Velocity@Novena Square. An oldie but a goodie, the Mussels with GLBS ($14.95++) is an award-winning starter, best mopped up with the accompanying garlic bread.

Of course, you can’t miss Fish & Co.’s ultra-crispy Best Fish & Chips ($19.95++), drizzled with that house special lemon butter sauce. Good for sharing is the Seafood Platter (from $24.95++), that comes with an assortment of seafood, French fries, and paella rice.

4. LingZhi Vegetarian Restaurant

Vegetarian food isn’t boring when it’s made by LingZhi Vegetarian Restaurant. This eatery uses premium and organic produce from specially-contracted farms to make nutritious and innovative dishes. The Vegetarian Satay Served In Fresh Pineapple ($20++) is one such dish that’s so tasty, you’ll forget it’s not meat.

For something heartier, have the Braised Yam and Vermicelli with Fermented Beancurd Sauce Served In Claypot ($18++), another signature dish that’s best enjoyed with steaming hot rice. Crowd pleasers include the highly addictive Crispy ‘Ma Po’ Beancurd ($16++) pops, and the Sweet and Sour Button Mushroom with Green Apple ($18++), a plant-based take on everyone’s favourite sweet and sour meat dish.

5. Lao Beijing

Take a quick trip with the family to China when you step into Lao Beijing─the double-storey interior was made to look like the inside of a traditional Chinese teahouse. A must-order here is the classic Lao Beijing Peking Duck (from $34++). This dish, which dates back to the time of the emperors, will give kids a great time customising their wraps with the crunchy corn cakes, savoury dipping sauce, and vegetables if they like.

Another quintessentially Chinese dish is the famed xiao long bao, or Steamed Juicy Meat Bun ($8++) as it’s known here. Introduce the family to Beijing-style Zhajiang Noodle ($10.80++), which Chinese workers brought with them to Korea in the late 19th century, and eventually gave rise to the Korean jjajangmyeon we know and love today.

6. Sō

Satisfy your family’s Japanese food cravings at with their value-for-money ramen and stone-pot rice bowls. The rice used here is premium Koshihikari rice from Niigata, and the noodles are specially made with premium wheat flour. Skip the regular tonkotsu ramen and try the Toriniku Uobushi Tonkotsu Ramen ($13.90++), which features thin, firm noodles in an umami tonkotsu broth. Double-boiled for hours, this broth is enriched with bonito and topped with melt-in-your-mouth slices of pork cheek.

Get a sizzling hot Butariki Ishinabe ($12.90++) and give the kids a chance to masak-masak, stirring the raw egg yolk in with a drizzle of Sō’s addictive sauce. The pan-fried and barbecued pork in the bowl provides a tantalising blend of textures and flavours. Let it stand a little for the crusty, charred bits at the bottom of the hot bowl to develop!
