If you frequent Johor Bahru (JB), you may have come across Xin Shan Bakery, a popular cafe with outlets in Horizon Hill and Mount Austin. They’re said to be a seinyu roll specialty cafe: “seinyu” being a direct translation of 生乳 (shēng rǔ), which means milk. New in: they’ve just opened a kiosk right outside Chinatown MRT Station!
This marks the Malaysian brand’s first overseas outlet. The takeaway-only kiosk shares the space with Hock Wong Bak Kwa Shop along the bustling Pagoda Street. Fans can look forward to eight cake roll flavours on offer, all of which are also available at their JB outlets.
If you love Royce’s nama chocolate, definitely go for the Matcha ($6.50) or Dalgona Coffee ($6.50) flavour.
The former comprises a light and fluffy matcha sponge encasing a rich matcha cream and a matcha-infused nama-style chocolate ganache in the middle. The latter is equally delicious, with a robust coffee-spiked cream paired with a cube of dark chocolate nama chocolate.
For something lighter, we recommend the Strawberry Seinyu Slice ($6), packed with house-made strawberry jam and real strawberry bites.
This strawberry cake roll spotlights the freshness and quality of the cream filling; according to the staff at the kiosk, only fresh whipping cream is used for seinyu cakes.
The Yam Seinyu Slice ($6)Â is another delicious pick, especially if you love orh nee desserts.
This swiss roll is generously filled with orh nee paste that’s made with fresh Thai yam. It’s rich, earthy, and creamy, without being jelak.
The cake rolls are all made in JB and transported to the SG branch. They tasted super fresh on our visit, and came loaded with fillings, so we recommend you head down ASAP before the word gets out!
