Update: This eatery is no longer operating in Maxwell Food Centre.
Situated in the renowned Maxwell Food Centre is Ying Jie Seafood, a hawker stall that serves seafood-centric dishes at an affordable price. From hearty seafood soups to umami-packed noodles, they all contain a generous portion of fresh crustaceans, shellfish and more, ensuring that all seafood lovers do not leave disappointed.Â
What’s unique about the dishes here is that they contain zero traces of MSG, as the owners of the stall pride themselves on using natural ingredients to bring flavour to their food. Â
Apart from their soups and noodles, they recently introduced a range of pao fan into their menu, as the dish is increasing in popularity amongst the public these days. You will find a series of four different pao fans, each one containing different types of seafood.Â
Their Scallop Pao Fan ($7) sees a bowl of fragrant white rice soaking in an orangey broth, topped with three plump scallops, a handful of clams, egg floss, and their signature crispy rice puffs. If you do not fancy scallops, you can opt for the Prawn ($7), LaLa ($6), or Seafood ($8) versions instead.Â
The well-cooked scallops were juicy but still had a firm bite, while the clams were fat and succulent. Dip these into their homemade Tok Kong Chilli Sauce made with calamansi and chilli padi, giving it a hint of tanginess and a kick of spice. This complemented the seafood well as it was able to get rid of any lingering fishy flavour.Â
Talk about variety: their Seafood Soup ($8) contains five different types of seafood, all swimming in an almost opaque broth. Those looking for something simple can go for the Fish Soup ($5), which uses an identical broth to the seafood soup but has numerous pieces of sliced fish instead.Â
Pair your soup with a bowl of Rice ($0.60), Thick Bee Hoon ($0.80), or regular Bee Hoon ($0.60) to complete your meal.Â
Considering that there is no artificial seasoning added to their soups, I was pleasantly surprised that the broth was still extremely flavourful. Every mouthful was perfumed with sweetness from the seafood, which helped to balance out its savouriness well.Â
The decently sized prawns were juicy, while the squid rings were QQ. The fish slices were quite fleshy, with a good bite to each of them. Â
For something unique to the hawker scene, go for the glistening Truffle Chilli Noodles ($7.50). This bowl of noodles comes with a handmade chilli paste infused with Sichuan peppercorn, chilli padi and more. This chilli is definitely not for the faint-hearted, especially with its numbing effect from the peppercorns.Â
This dish is finished with a generous portion of clams, large prawns, as well as scallops.
Coated in a thick layer of truffle oil, each slurp of noodles is perfumed with a deep musky aroma. The dark sauce leaned towards the sweeter side, while the chilli left me reaching for my cup of teh C peng on the side. Those who can take spice should definitely opt for this dish.
If you didn’t get enough of their chilli from their Truffle Chilli Noodles, they have a secret menu item that only loyal customers know about. This is their Fish Soup With Chilli ($6), which features their fish soup mixed with a large dollop of their mala-infused chilli for an extra depth of flavour.Â
You will find Ying Jie Seafood in the middle aisle of Maxwell Food Centre, amongst the many other famous hawker stalls here. This bustling food court is conveniently located right next to the newly built Maxwell MRT Station, which will begin operations in 2022. Meanwhile, you can also take a five minutes walk from Chinatown MRT Station instead.Â
Do make sure to come earlier in the day if you wish to avoid the lunch crowd, as this hawker centre is a popular stop for those living and working in the area.Â
Ying Jie Seafood not only serves up fresh seafood at an affordable price, their dishes are extremely hearty with a great amount of flavour, despite the fact that they do not use artificial flavouring. This is definitely the place to go if you are craving for a satisfying bowl of soup, pao fan, or chilli noodles—especially if you are a big fan of seafood.Â
Ying Jie Seafood is offering a free scallop for all fully vaccinated customers! Simply show them proof of vaccination on your Trace Together App upon placing your order.Â
