This Popular Mookata Stall Has $14.90 Buffet In AMK—Is It Worth The Visit?

Family Mookata has $14.90 buffet in Ang Mo Kio

If you look up Family Mookata outlets on Google Maps, you’ll realise that all three of its outlets sport incredibly high ratings. Its Ang Mo Kio outlet, for instance, has a near-perfect 4.9 with more than 3,000 reviews. Part of the appeal is likely the price—from just $14.90, you can enjoy the Protein Buffet with free-flow meats, vegetables, rice, and sauces.

Price is one thing, but we wanted to see if the food was any good. So we dropped by said outlet to try as many dishes as we could from their Protein Buffet.

Food at Family Mookata

Once we made our payment, the stall allowed us to hand-pick whatever items we wanted from the chilled display—except seafood, which requires you to upgrade to the Seafood Buffet ($19.90).

Let’s start with the meat. There’s a solid selection here, from classic flavours to more adventurous marinades.

We were most intrigued by the Cajun Chicken, since cajun seasoning isn’t something you see at mookata places. It worked surprisingly well—the earthy, smoky notes of the seasoning made it perfect for the grill. And if you get the chicken just right, juicy and tender, it’s genuinely satisfying. For a spicier alternative, there’s the Mala Chicken, which packs a seriously numbing punch.

The next two chicken options, however, leaned a little too sweet for our liking, but for different reasons. The Tom Yum was too sweet, without the requisite sour and spicy notes of the iconic Thai soup, and the Honey Chicken simply got too cloying after one piece.

Among the pork options, we tried the basic Pork Belly, but it was sliced a little too thin for our liking, leaving it without that satisfying, succulent bite. We did, however, enjoy the Garlic Pork, which was unabashedly rich and garlicky.

As for the non-meat ingredients, there was a fairly standard selection including crabmeat, cheese tofu, fishballs, and various vegetables. There’s nothing too special about these, but they get the job done, especially as fodder for the steamboat part of mookata.

Like most mookata places, the stall offers a variety of sauces for you to enjoy. Their Thai-style chilli, with its spicy, tangy, and garlicky notes, gave the already flavourful meat an extra burst of flavour.

The buffet also came with cheddar cheese that you can melt and use as a dip. This adds a creamier, more savoury dimension to the meat.

Ambience at Family Mookata

Family Mookata is located in a small coffeeshop in an Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood, with some pretty enticing names here, including Danlao egg rice. It’s pretty clean and well-furnished, so you should be able to enjoy your mookata with minimal distractions.

The coffeeshop is a five-minute bus ride and a seven-minute walk from Ang Mo Kio MRT Station.

Family Mookata – Eatbook Review

With its affordable price point and solid selection of meats, Family Mookata is one of the better mookata places out there. Again, there are three outlets across Singapore, so be sure to check which one is nearest to you!
