This Popular Ayam Gepuk Stall In AMK Is Run By An Ex-Singapore Idol Contestant

As a Malaysian, I’ve long been familiar with ayam gepuk, a smashed, deep-fried chicken dish served with a fiery sambal and a nutty sauce. It’s taken a while for Singapore to catch on, though a few stalls have started popping up recently, including Gepuk Guys in Bedok North and Super Gepuk in Tampines. Ayam Gepok Anakmak is another hawker stall that’s been gaining online traction lately. 

Tucked inside Sinfoodie coffeeshop at 215 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, this stall first started as a home-based business back in 2020, run by former Singapore Idol contestant Noorazlina Ajis and her husband.

Ayam gepuk differs from the more familiar ayam penyet mainly in its sauce. Instead of a straightforward sambal, ayam gepuk pairs fried chicken with a hand-ground cashew nut sauce, giving the dish a richer, nuttier profile.

At Ayam Gepok Anakmak, diners can customise their spice level on a scale of five, where Level 0 is pure cashew sauce and Level 4 swaps in roughly 80% chilli, with less cashew as the heat cranks up. It’s an inverse spice system, so the less cashew nut sauce you get, the fierier the sambal.

The Original Ayam Gepuk Set ($8.50) comes with a piece of fried chicken thigh, plain white rice, fried tofu and tempeh, and kobis goreng, AKA stir-fried cabbage. The star is their rich hand-ground cashew sauce, which pairs well with the side of garlicky, spicy sambal.

If you’re ordering online, their e-menu also includes Nasi Lemak Ayam Gepok ($10.30), where gepuk chicken is paired with coconut rice instead of plain white rice, along with various sides from $1 to bulk up the meal. These include Crispy Chicken Skin, Crispy Kangkong, Crispy Bayam, Bergedil, and even a Whole Leg Chicken for those wanting extra meat.
