Get Mini Bowls From $1.90 At This New Eatery Near MacPherson MRT Station

3 Meals Bowl by Bowl has cheap mini bowls in MacPherson

If you’re ever in MacPherson, keep a lookout for 3 Meals Bowl by Bowl, a new spot in the neighbourhood that’s been drawing long queues during peak hours. Not to be confused with Taiwanese cafe Eat 3 Bowls or popular salted egg chicken rice chain 3 Meals a Day, this eatery specialises in Chinese fare served in mini bowls.

Each dish is priced by the colour of its bowl, kind of like what you’ll find at most sushi conveyor belt restaurants

Green bowls go for $1.90, orange ones are $2.90, red and white bowls are $3.90, and the premium blue bowls will set you back $4.90 each.

Some of the $1.90 green bowl options include Onion Egg, Minced Meat with Eggplant, Chinese Spinach in Superior Soup, and Stir-Fried Chinese Cabbage. We went for the first two.

The Onion Egg was a simple mix of stir-fried onions and fried omelette—pretty ordinary in terms of flavour, with nothing to shout about. As for the Minced Meat with Eggplant, it came with eggplant pieces in a braised pork stew that tasted a little too watered down for our liking.

We had similar thoughts about the Mapo Tofu ($2.90), which didn’t have that numbing spice we were expecting.

A collective favourite was the Coffee-flavoured Pork Rib ($3.90), featuring about four pieces of tender pork ribs doused in a sweet coffee sauce.

While we liked that the exterior of the pork was crispy even after sitting out for a bit, our gripe was that the pork bones were rather huge, so there wasn’t much meat on each piece.

If you’re not big on coffee, the Sweet and Sour Pork ($2.90) is a solid alternative. It comes with bite-sized pork pieces and strikes a nice balance between sweet and savoury.

The most expensive dish we got was the Steamed Clams and Shrimp with Vermicelli ($4.90). A fragrant garlic aroma hit us the moment we went in for a bite.

You get about 10 small clams and two prawns. The highlight, though, was the springy vermicelli noodles at the bottom, which soaked up all that rich, umami-packed sauce.

3 Meals Bowl by Bowl is a 40-seater eatery located at Grantral Mall. For easy access, it’s a short three-minute walk from MacPherson MRT Station.
