We Tried 7-Eleven’s New Milo Lava Cake, Curry’O Sandwich, And Nasi Lemak Onigiri

By now, we know 7-Eleven isn’t shy with innovative creations and offerings, which range from viral self-serve smoothies to tiramisu flown from Italy and Oreo cheesecakes. This time, in celebration of SG60, 7-Eleven is rolling out a range of Singapore-inspired versions of their popular ready-to-eat meals!

Perfect for your late-night supper escapade after catching the National Day fireworks, these crowd-favourite snacks just got a glow-up. Enter the Dabao Flavours of Singapore 2.0 series, with collaborations with famous local brands including Milo, Old Chang Kee and more.

Dessert lovers cannot miss the ‘Made with MILO’ Lava Cake ($3.90). Inspired by their signature chocolate lava cake, this Milo-filled version is a nostalgic treat that’ll bring you right back to those days of queuing at the school Milo truck.

We loved how incredibly gao it was, both in flavour and texture; the molten Milo filling was decadent and gooey, while the exterior was balanced between fluffy cake and fudgy brownie. Some may shudder at how rich this is, but for those with a sweet tooth, this will be right up your alley.

The Nasi Lemak Chicken Onigiri ($2.80) was the biggest winner of the lot. Beautifully eye-catching with its blue pea rice, yet it was a flavour bomb the moment we bit in. The rice was rich and lemak, while the chicken filling had a strong, fragrant sambal spice that burst with flavours. This innovative onigiri is a must-try.

The Chicken Laksa Macaroni Wrap ($3.90) was packed with bold laksa spices, and we thought it was rather enjoyable. The addition of hard-boiled egg and macaroni elevated the textures of the wrap, although we felt the whole thing was a bit too small. Despite this, we think it’s a convenient grab-and-go option for those on the move.

A returning favourite, the Old Chang Kee Curry’O Double Combo Sandwich + Egg Mayo ($4) tasted exactly like Old Chang Kee’s beloved curry puff, albeit this time between soft white bread. While we enjoyed the rich, fragrant curry filling, we missed the crispy, oily shell of a traditional curry puff. Not to mention that we would prefer both halves of the sandwich to be Curry’O, instead of including the standard egg mayo!

We also tried the Kopi-misu ($3.90), a tiramisu dessert whose sponge layer was supposedly made of kopi-soaked ladyfingers. It was enjoyable as a quick dessert, but we felt that the kopi flavouring was too close to regular instant coffee powder, and did not stand out from other tiramisu offerings.

Other SG-inspired items include the Chicken Curry Rice, Sambal Spaghetti with Chicken Chop, and Chilli Crab with Scrambled Egg Toast. These unique offerings are available from now till 16 September

If you’re into cute collectibles, check out 7-Eleven’s latest collab with local artist SADSHRIMPS. From now till 12 August, spend $11 in a single receipt to redeem a surprise Mini Munch Club keychain featuring iconic 7-Eleven snacks such as onigiri and Slurpee. These are basically keychain blindboxes reimagined in SADSHRIMPS’ whimsical, nostalgic style.

There are five designs in total, so good luck trying to stop at just one. And if you hit $18 from 13 August to 26 August, you can also redeem a free matching tote bag to carry your new loot.
