There has been no dearth of cafes and restaurants in the CBD area, with new openings every month—think Alice Boulangerie, Yatsudoki, Kream Krafthouse, Abseil cafe stands out from its competitors with its minimalistic black-and-white interior. Found on the ground floor of Eon Shenton, the five-seater cafe is not to be missed.
The cafe serves espresso drinks in Black ($5), White ($5.50), and Tonic ($8) styles, as well as pour-over coffee, such as the Bertulfo Cochumbe ($8) and Machana Estate ($13).Â
The signature, and most photo-worthy drink, is the Abseil ($8.50), an Einspanner made with a double shot of espresso, osmose water, and cream. Reminiscent of a vanilla sweet cream cold brew from Starbucks, drinkers are suggested to first sample a mouthful of the cream, and to then taste the coffee on its own, before finally stirring and drinking it together.
All the coffee here is made from beans sourced across the globe, specially roasted by the Taiwanese roastery, All Day Roasting Company.
For tea lovers, floral tea infusions such as Oolong Osmanthus Tea are also available from $7.50 to $11.50 a pot.
Do keep an eye out for the return of their previously sold-out Dacquoise ($7), a French meringue dessert where whipped cream or buttercream is sandwiched between airy biscuits. Due to supply issues, these are touted to return in January. Abseil’s dacquoise flavours are not commonly found in local cafes, so expect the likes of Earl Grey, Injeolmi, Matcha, Passionfruit, and Pistachio.Â
If you manage to secure a seat at Abseil Cafe, you can be sure to enjoy the visually-pleasing minimalist aesthetics here, from high ceilings, to jet black coffee equipment, and sparse countertop. With benches intentionally leaned against the pristine white wall, you can sit back and watch the baristas as they prepare your drinks.
