Sandwiched between Woodlands and Sembawang, Admiralty is a neighbourhood you might not think much of. On the surface, Admiralty doesn’t seem to have much good food, but residents like me have some hidden gems up our sleeves. Here are a bunch of great food spots at Admiralty you can check out the next time you’re in the hood!
Those who get hunger pangs at night can head to YCC Kitchen at 688 Eating House. Go for a plate of Salted Egg Yolk Calamari ($10) that remains crunchy despite being drenched in a generous serving of salted egg yolk sauce. For a cheaper option, dig into Seafood Fried Noodles ($4) that comes with squid, prawns, fish, and fried egg. On the flip side, you might have to wait quite a while for food to be served, so hangry souls should seek solace elsewhere.

Peri Peri Grille Pasta has huge portions for very reasonable prices. Order Fiery Chicken with Spaghetti ($6.90) and you’ll receive a huge piece of chicken chop and a pile of pasta, as well as salad and corn on the side. Beef lovers, get your fix with Grilled Prime Ribeye Steak (200g) at $15.90. While the quality of the steak is not anything to shout about, it’s definitely a steal.

Indian Muslim Food at Woodlands 11 should be given an award for having the most straightforward name ever. This kopitiam stall is open all day, every day, so you can get your prata cravings satisfied no matter what time your tummy cries. What you should make a trip here for, however, is Maggi Goreng with Egg ($4). The instant noodles are coated in a delicious spicy sauce and wok-fried with a good portion of cabbage, spinach and crunchy onions.

Opening hours: Daily 24 hours
The secret to Fork & Spoon Ban Mian’s delicious Tom Yum Ban Mian ($4.30) lies in their use of generous portions of minced chicken instead of pork. To make things even better, the stall owners are not stingy with toppings such as shallots, anchovies, spring onions and seaweed. They pack the noodles and soup separately when you dapao so the noodles don’t get soft. It also surprisingly stays al dente for quite a while even after soaking up the soup. The only downside is that the soup is a little too salty for me, but the tom yum taste is great, so I just make sure I have a glass of water while eating.

Hai Zhong Bao is for nights you want an indulgent and filling dinner. Chilli Crab (seasonal price) here comes with gravy that’s thicker than usual and filled with sizeable chunks of egg and crab meat. I could eat the gravy by the spoonful, but it’s way better as a dip for hot fried mantous ($3 for six pieces) – my mouth waters just thinking about it.

Mookata is always a great way to bond with your friends, and Siam Square Mookata lets you do that all the way until 3am. They offer a good range of seasoned meats, seafood, vegetables and noodles at $2 to $2.80 per plate. If you and your buddies are gonna HTHT for hours, go for their buffet at $29 so you won’t feel hungry again by the time all your friends pour their sorrows out.

Creamy Duck’s takeaway at the overhead bridge beside Admiralty MRT Station sells ice-cream, waffles, and takoyaki great for snacking on as you walk home or wait for the bus. Their hot and steaming waffles are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and you can zhng it with a wide range of fillings. Interesting choices for your waffle include Butter Cinnamon ($1.70) and Nutella Banana ($2.50). Those who want something more can go all out and order a 3 Scoop Ice Cream Waffle for just $3.50!

You know a duck rice stall is doing something right if they’ve expanded to become a chain with 24 outlets. Yu Kee Duck Rice is known for Specialty Braised Duck Rice ($4) that is packed with flavours and generous portions of duck and rice. Each plate also includes simple yet satisfying sides such as braised taukwa and egg.

Found in Koufu at Woodlands Mart, this is one vegetarian stall I would encourage even meat lovers to try. Out of their wide variety of vegetables and mock meat, deep fried kang kong fritters are my favourite and I always pair them with piping hot curry and fried mock prawn rolls. In addition to their cai fan (mixed rice) you can also get Fried Rice ($4) that comes with crackers or Pineapple Rice ($4).

Traditional Penang Food is a restaurant at Toa Payoh, and they’ve got a small takeaway on the overhead bridge beside Admiralty MRT Station. They sell Penang Assam Laksa ($4) and Penang Char Kway Teow ($5), but my favourite is their Penang Chendol ($2.80). This dessert is a little savoury in a pleasant way, like salted caramel. The green pandan jelly is freshly made and has a really good texture. Even though I don’t usually like kidney beans, I enjoyed them in this chendol. This is definitely better than an average bowl of chendol you’ll find at kopitiams, so give it a try on a hot day.
