Ah B Seafood White Mee Hoon Review: XL Prawn And Crayfish Bee Hoon At Golden Mile

Ah B Seafood White Mee Hoon has XL prawns and crayfish stir-fried bee hoon

Ah B Seafood White Mee Hoon is a relatively new stall at Golden Mile Food Centre. Opened earlier this year, it’s run by two third-generation hawkers who originally wanted to sell Japanese bentos—FYI,one of them started out as a junior chef at Sen of Japan in Marina Bay Sands. This pivot seems to be paying off, though, as they’ve already caught the attention of Mediacorp star Edmund Chen, who visits their stall regularly.

Food at Ah B Seafood White Mee Hoon

Heading down to the stall ourselves, we found that their menu is small and focused. Diners can order the titular white bee hoon with seafood ingredients of their choice, ranging from prawns, lala and sotong, to crayfish.

I was surprised to see that the Prawn And Lala White Mee Hoon ($6.50/$10) was the same price as their Sliced Fish and Sotong White Mee Hoon. Usually, prawns come at a premium, especially if they are larger in size.

For $6.50, then, I wasn’t expecting much. I was blown away, however, when I received my order. The prawns were huge, and cooked to a vibrant colour that made them all the more appetising.

They tasted as good as they looked. Fresh, meaty, juicy, and sweet, it’s not an exaggeration when I say that they were some of the best prawns I’d tasted in a while.

The lala were also well-cooked, with a pleasant chewy texture and similarly sweet taste.

What tied the entire dish together was the sauce. It had a rich, full-bodied flavour and pronounced wok hei that was soaked up by the noodles. Some textural contrast was also provided by the small pieces of chopped Chinese cabbage and fried garlic.

To top it all off, pair the dish with the stall’s house-made chilli. It reminded my colleague and me of chicken rice chilli, but with a slightly tangier note that complemented the brininess of the seafood nicely.

The Crayfish And Lala White Mee Hoon ($10/$15) is an upgrade that swaps out the prawns for two crayfishes.

Once again, for just $10, I was surprised that there was more than one crayfish. Not only that, they were also fleshy and tender. The fact that the meat practically fell out of the shell too was indicative of their freshness.

Because of the crayfish, the sauce here was slightly more savoury, with a deeper orangey hue. Nonetheless, it was just as tasty as the first dish. I did prefer the prawns to the crayfish, however, as they were generally meatier.

Ambience at Ah B Seafood White Mee Hoon

Golden Mile Food Centre is about a nine-minute walk away from Nicoll Highway MRT Station, or a 12-minute walk from Lavender MRT Station. It’s not the most convenient place, but it’s not awfully ulu either.

When we were at the food centre on a Thursday afternoon, there was quite the lunch crowd. Thankfully, there weren’t many people at Ah B Seafood White Mee Hoon, so we got our food fairly quickly.

The verdict

Considering the generous portions of fresh seafood, Ah B Seafood White Mee Hoon’s dishes are incredibly value-for-money. Add on the fact that they’re flavourful and delicious, and you have a gem of a hawker stall that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anybody. My only gripe is that it’s just a little out of the way.
